Job Description
Accountabilities:
- An ambassador for mission, vision, values and goals of Osler
- Facilitates a culture that supports continuous learning, clinical excellence and research
- Promotes open communication within and across the lab and the clinical programs and services
- Physician authority for specimen management and pre-analytics, chemistry and point-of-care
- Defines pre-analytical standards for testing, post-analytical standards and defines reference intervals
- Provides subject matter expertise to support the laboratory technical staff for specimen assessment and preparation, and technical troubleshooting to ensure continuous and high quality laboratory service
- Oversees and monitors proficiency testing and quality control in specific areas of the laboratory
- Supports and provides technical guidance regarding quality control, quality assurance and tests ongoing performance
- Reviews QA, QC, polices and procedure documents and signs off per the quality management system
- In conjunction with Lab leadership (e.g. managers/director/chief) and clinical programs, develops service standards including: turnaround time, test menu, testing algorithms, utilization guidelines and others as assigned
- Collaborate with Lab leadership (e.g. manager/director/chief) to develop policies and procedures to ensure the Laboratory meets provincial, national and international regulatory requirements
- Provides consultation services to clinicians and other health care providers on laboratory tests (e.g. selection of tests, test performance [analytical sensitivity, specificity, precision, biological variation, interpretation of results)
- Interprets patient laboratory tests for screening, diagnosis, management and monitoring of disease processes
- Develops interpretive guides for other professionals using the laboratory service, through the selection and validation of reference intervals, interpretive comments and critical values
- In consultation with clinical colleagues, develops, implements and monitors testing algorithms, appropriate testing turnaround times, practice guidelines and care pathways
- Develops and implements policies and procedures to ensure the laboratory produces high quality information, and meets regulatory requirements and standards of practice
- Assists the medical director in liaison with medical staff through the preparation and presentation of material at the medical and surgical rounds, the interpretation of clinical chemistry results and the suggestion of appropriate diagnostic pathways
- Assists the medical director and the administrative director in the preparation of operating and capital budgets and in the preparation of business case justifications of major capital or operational projects
- Teaching and research projects as approved by the medical director and hospital administration
- Participates in the detection, reporting, correcting and prevention spurious results
- Other duties as assigned
- May be required to attend hospital during off hours to attend to emergency situations
Qualifications
- Completion of a PhD in Clinical Biochemistry or related field
- Minimum two years medical laboratory experience
- Certification or eligible for certification by the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent

Additional Information
Hours: Currently days, Monday to Friday (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)
Salary:
Minimum: $ 74.14 per hour
Maximum: $94.30 per hour
