Job Description
Western Digital is looking for an electrical engineer responsible for design of high-performance storage enclosures and servers for the enterprise marketplace. This is a high-impact, high visibility opportunity for someone who has superior technical skills, excels at collaboration, is a strong leader, and possesses an enthusiasm for success.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Contribute to the design of enterprise class storage enclosures and servers. These products will include things such and hard drives, SSDs, power supplies, and printed circuit board assemblies. Such PCBAs would include features like SOCs, processors, memory, high power delivery, and high-speed data communication interfaces.
- Be responsible for the development of PCBAs through the entire design cycle, including writing specifications, performing schematic capture, overseeing layout, developing proof-of-concept, coordinating the build of prototypes, technical board bring-up and integration of the prototype systems, and extensive design verification testing.
- Be responsible for releasing all relevant data into Western Digital’s revision control system and working with manufacturing to resolve any production issues.
- Work closely with other organizations within Western Digital, including product management, procurement, quality, and manufacturing engineering, to assure that your PCBA designs meet all product and regulatory requirements, and can be effectively verified, manufactured, and tested.
- Conduct design and feature reviews, be accountable for tracking schedules, issues and resolutions, and work with international suppliers and manufacturing locations.
Qualifications
As a successful candidate you will have the following skills, knowledge, and experience:
- BS or MS in Electrical or Computer Engineering
- At least 0-5+ years of PCBA development experience in computing, storage or related fields.
- Be well organized with strong attention to detail
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Willingness to work individually, and as a team member, to ensure commitments are met
- Able to effectively coordinate and guide the activities of others to meet goals
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, capable of interfacing effectively with peers on other teams
- Digital circuit design expertise
- Understanding of high-speed circuit concepts applicable to current generations of PCIe, Ethernet, and SAS/SATA bus architectures.
- Familiarity with printed circuit board technologies including transmission lines, techniques for reducing signal reflections, and power supply switch-node layout
- Experience implementing power circuits including DC/DC converters and regulators
- High proficiency in using standard electrical lab equipment to verify electrical designs
- Skilled at using the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
The following qualifications are desired but not required:
- Experience leading small or large teams to successfully develop hardware
- FPGA based design experience, including electrical design, programming and verification
- Experience with high performance server CPUs and implementations
- Working knowledge of Cadence Allegro Design Entry Capture and Allegro PCB Designer, including use of constraints, is a plus.

- An employee’s pay position within the salary range may be based on several factors including but not limited to (1) relevant education; qualifications; certifications; and experience; (2) skills, ability, knowledge of the job; (3) performance, contribution and results; (4) geographic location; (5) shift; (6) internal and external equity; and (7) business and organizational needs.
- The salary range is what we believe to be the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in California, Colorado, New York or remote jobs that can be performed in California, Colorado and New York. This range may be modified in the future.
- If your position is non-exempt, you are eligible for overtime pay pursuant to company policy and applicable laws. You may also be eligible for shift differential pay, depending on the shift to which you are assigned.
You will be eligible to be considered for bonuses under either WD’s Short Term Incentive Plan (“STI Plan”) or the Sales Incentive Plan (“SIP”) which provides incentive awards based on Company and individual performance, depending on your role and your performance. You may be eligible to participate in our annual Long-Term Incentive (LTI) program, which consists of restricted stock units (RSUs) or cash equivalents, pursuant to the terms of the LTI plan.
