Comparable to an Actuarial Services Manager, our Team Leader Actuarial Services is responsible for providing analysis, recommendation, and implementation for assigned market segment(s) to achieve corporate financial reporting objectives by initiating analyses by market segment. Provide effective technical and non-technical business advice with supporting documentation and analysis. 

The ideal candidate is fully credentialed (FSA), an accomplished health actuary and an innovative problem solver. They enjoy using advanced technology and sources of data to inform decisions – and they will help Wellmark cultivate this culture within our actuarial space and the enterprise. You are a great communicator capable of effectively building consensus, leading change, and delivering executive presentations. 

Qualifications

Required: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science or related field, or direct and applicable work experience. 
  • Fellow of Society of Actuaries (FSA) 
  • Minimum 7 years of actuarial experience in health insurance 
  • Leadership skills typically gained through a combination of project or informal leadership that demonstrates competencies. Ability to lead teams through change. 
  • Advanced analytical and consultative skills with the ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams to appropriate business decisions and recommendations, including the identification and management of risk. Attentive to details. 
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and present information to varying audiences, including senior leadership. 
  • Natural curiosity with the ability to identify creative, innovative solutions that support/achieve long-range strategic objectives. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships across the business. 
  • Ability to independently manage large scale, complex projects, make decisions, and produce results in a deadline driven, fast-paced environment. 
  • Understanding of applicable rules and regulations. 
  • Ability to coach and mentor others. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g., Excel, Access) and technical aptitude to learn new systems quickly and produce ad hoc reports. 

Preferred:

  • Master's degree
  • Financial reporting experience

Additional Information

a. Provide leadership and day-to-day management of financial and human resources, primarily focusing on employee coaching, development, performance improvement, coordination and budgeting for staff and department(s) specific functions/services. Support business objectives and produce results that are effective, accurate, timely, and on target to meet business and stakeholder needs. 

b. Oversee and direct the estimation of actuarial balance sheet items by providing information relating to regulations and rules and industry best practices on a variety of financial reporting issues. Consult with and provide dependable, accurate and timely information to Chief Actuary and Chief Financial Officer.  

c. Responsible for oversight and direction of Actuarial staff. Responsible for providing analysis, recommendation, and implementation for assigned market segment(s) to achieve corporate profitability objectives by initiating analyses based on review of the market segment(s). Responsible for financial integrity of one or more market segments. Recommend profitability targets; ensure pricing is consistent with established targets for those business segments priced in actuarial. Provide effective technical and non-technical business advice with supporting documentation and analysis. 

d. Initiate, review, and provide oversight for comprehensive and timely data analysis of health care trends and financial measures with summary conclusions and recommendations, coordinating with several different disciplines and staff as needed. 

e. Review, coordinate, and provide oversight for actuarial models used to estimate actuarial balance sheet items. Use data collection and research methodologies that meet established actuarial guidelines for statistical accuracy and that will produce reasonable results. 

f. Perform peer review activities. Review data, formulas, and calculations as needed to validate work products completed by others. Reviewer should also be able to sign of and certify that work is in accordance with standard actuarial principles and is in accordance with any regulatory guidelines. 

g. Develop staff and create a work environment that promotes the continual improvement of data capabilities and the quality of department analysis and reporting. Direct the work of actuarial staff members. 

h. Responsible for understanding legislation, rules and regulations which may significantly impact the business. Frequently interacts with senior leadership, internal and external stakeholders, and others to communicate, organize, plan, strategize, and/or oversee assigned activities. 

i. Initiate, plan, and manage corporate or department actuarial projects relating to complex issues and trends, coordinating with several different disciplines and staff to improve the overall effectiveness of the organization. Work typically involves assessment, analysis, design, testing and implementation of new systems, policies, or standards that are critical to the competitive positioning or long-term viability of the organization. 

j. Take lead on consulting to various departments such as Accounting, Financial Planning & Analysis, Healthcare Informatics, Network Management, Legal Services, Compliance, and others as needed on various initiatives 

k. Review, prepare, and maintain documentation related to standard operating procedures as well as routine and special projects.
