Job Description

The items detailed herein are guidelines for the Mechanical (HVAC + Wet Services) Project Engineer position; they are to include the items detailed below but are not limited to these. These items are indicators of eligibility / capability for the position. The suitability of staff for the position remains at the discretion of management and subject to an Engineering position being available. Hospital and other Healthcare experience will be advantageous.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proficient in Air Conditioning, heat load and ventilation calculations.
  • Proficient in Wet Services pipe sizing, drainage design and hot water generation.
  • Thorough understanding of South African National Standards (SANS – including R158), IUSS (global standard understanding such as British Standards, ASHRAE, etc. will be advantageous).
  • Proficient in various HVAC design software packages (e.g. HAP, I.E.S) and manual air psychrometric analysis and design.
  • Air/fluid/heat Flow calculation software and analysis
  • Design, based on client requirements and specifications.
  • Collaborate with architects, project managers, and other stakeholders to integrate wet services and HVAC systems seamlessly into building designs.
  • Proficient in various HVAC and Wet Services modeling software and BIM conversant is essential (AutoCAD, Revit, BIM360, etc.)
  • Proficient in all project stages from inception through to close-out and competent in constructing and compiling tender documentation and management of that process.
  • Formulation of Bills of Quantities (BOQ’s)
  • Specialist equipment specifications understanding and approvals.
  • Quality control (QA/QC)
  • Site supervision and construction monitoring
  • Trouble shooting existing installations.
  • Cost control (related to mechanical Wet and HVAC only)
  • Project scoping and scope monitoring
  • Oversee the installation, testing, and commissioning of wet services and HVAC systems.
  • Coordinate with contractors and construction teams to ensure accurate implementation of designs.
  • Conduct site inspections to monitor progress and resolve any issues that may arise during installation.
  • Contractor and contract management (mechanical Wet and HVAC discipline)
  • Fundamental understanding of Electrical and Fire engineering is required.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies to enhance system sustainability.
  • Integrate renewable energy sources where applicable to reduce environmental impact.

Qualifications

  • BSc/BTech in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited University
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in HVAC and Wet Services Design. MEPF Building services experience highly advantageous
  • Candidate engineer with ECSA. Professionally registered with ECSA highly advantageous
  • Autodesk software experience such as Revit,AutoCAD and Autodesk Construction Cloud (or BIM360) Software experience
  • Bluebeam experience advantageous
  • Solid knowledge of SANS 0252 and SANS 10400 and supplemental knowledge of the equivalent CIBSE/BS/ASPE codes highly advantageous.
  • Solid and demonstrated experience in project budgets, valuation certificates and cost reports.
  • Solid and demonstrated experience in tender documents, measuring of Bills of Quantities (BOQ’s) and compiling JBCC-based tender documents

Key competencies and Generic Skills:

  • Computer literacy skills (Advanced knowledge of Excel and Word)
  • Experience in various Autodesk products (AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, BIM360 suite)
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Team player
  • Excellent communicator and good discussion and problem resolution skills
  • A self-starter who can run with and manage his own projects with the guidance of a senior engineer
  • Skilled in thermodynamic and pipe network design principles
  • Must be responsible and have a high level of self-sufficiency and be able to apply common sense
  • Must have a questioning and inquisitive mind
  • Code B drivers’ license (preferably own car)
  • Willing and able to travel abroad
