Payment Products Development Team (PPD) under Visa Technology Org is building a new generation of digital and secured products to facilitate commerce in everyone’s digital and mobile lives. The Opportunity: 

We are looking for Versatile, curious, and energetic Staff Software Engineers who embrace solving complex challenges on a global scale. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will design and build scalable, secure, and high-performance backend systems using Java, Spring, and Spring Boot. You will help drive technical design, contribute to modernization of existing services, and partner with cross-functional teams to deliver robust solutions across enterprise and payment-oriented platforms. This role requires strong hands-on engineering depth, sound architectural judgment, and the ability to improve team standards through collaboration, mentoring, and technical leadership.

You will also play a key role in advancing AI-assisted software engineering practices, using tools such as Claude Code, Cline, GitHub Copilot, and ChatGPT to accelerate development workflows and partnering with teams to integrate LLM- and MCP-based capabilities into applications and internal workflows.

• Design code and systems that touch 40% of the world population while influencing Visa’s internal standards for scalability, security, and reusability

Essential Functions:

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performance backend applications, APIs, and microservices using Java, Spring Framework, and Spring Boot.
• Contribute to enhancements and changes across existing application codebases while improving maintainability, reusability, and system performance
• Develop code that complies with design specifications and follows security standards, Java/J2EE best practices, and industry-standard design patterns where applicable.
• Build clean, maintainable, and efficient software solutions that support quality, reliability, and long-term extensibility.
• Partner with business and technology stakeholders to define requirements, understand use cases, and design appropriate technical solutions by clarifying the what, why, and how.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Test, DevOps, Platform, Operations, Release Engineering, and other Agile/Scrum teams to deliver high-quality solutions.
• Participate in and influence design reviews and code reviews to ensure solutions delivered by you and your teammates align with development standards and quality expectations.
• Create technical documentation and operational procedures for installation, deployment, maintenance, and support. Work with Operations teams to troubleshoot production issues.
• Identify opportunities for future enhancements and drive refinements to standards, best practices, design patterns, and development methodologies.
• Evaluate and adopt innovative technologies, challenge the status quo, and contribute to proofs of concept and technical improvements that push beyond traditional solutions.
• Utilize GenAI tools to enhance software development productivity, including code generation, optimization, debugging, and testing.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate AI solutions, including LLMs and MCP-based capabilities, into existing systems and engineering workflows.
• Actively contribute to product quality improvements, valuable service technology, and new business flows across diverse Agile squads.
• Help mentor and onboard newer team members, elevate team capability, and contribute to a culture of accountability, learning, and engineering excellence.

Education/Experience:

Bachelors/Masters’ degree in computer science/Computer Engineering or other related fields with a minimum of 7+ years of overall experience in application development/engineering.
 

Basic Qualifications:

7+ years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 5+ years with an Advanced Degree, or equivalent experience.   

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.   

Strong understanding of software detailed design, including component design, API/interface contracts, error handling, and data flow modeling.   

Strong knowledge of software engineering best practices including clean code, modular design, maintainability, testability, and code review practices.   

Strong understanding of secure software development principles, including secure API design, authentication, authorization, input validation, and data protection.   

Strong proficiency in Java/J2EE/REST and frameworks such as Spring Framework, Spring MVC, Spring Boot, JPA, and Hibernate.   

Proven experience building secure, scalable, highly available microservices and REST APIs in production environments.   

Hands-on experience with Spring Security, Spring Data, Actuator, validation frameworks, and production-grade service development patterns.   

Strong understanding of system design, resiliency, observability, security, and maintainable software architecture.   

Strong experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, Git, Maven, Jenkins, and Artifactory.   

Experience with Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL databases, along with performance tuning and data-access optimization.   

Familiarity with Kafka, Kafka Streams, Kafka Connect, Flink, or other event-driven technologies.   

Experience applying secure coding practices and security review principles in backend and microservices-based systems.   

Hands-on experience with GenAI tools such as Claude Code, Cline, GitHub Copilot, and ChatGPT for coding, debugging, refactoring, testing, and documentation.   

Strong understanding of LLMs, Agentic AI, MCP/tool-based workflows, and practical AI-assisted software engineering patterns.   

Experience integrating AI capabilities into applications and engineering workflows, with sound judgment around quality, security, and maintainability.   

Preferred Qualification:

Experience supporting production applications and driving operational excellence, availability, and customer issue resolution.

Experience with Spring Security, OAuth2/OIDC, and enterprise authentication/authorization patterns.

Experience with Kafka-based event-driven architectures and asynchronous system design.

Familiarity with RAG, embeddings, vector databases, tool/function calling, or AI workflow orchestration.

Experience adopting GenAI tools in team workflows, including coding standards, review practices, and safe usage guidelines.

Exposure to payment systems, transaction platforms, or other high-throughput, high-availability domains
