Job Description

Visa is seeking an attorney to support Visa’s business operations in Mexico, as well as support other Central America and Caribbean markets as needed.  Position is based in Mexico City, Mexico, and reports to the Senior Director, Legal, Mexico, Central America & Caribbean. 

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal support to the business teams in Mexico.  Develop creative solutions and guide the team along the path to implementation by performing a structured legal analysis based on current complex payments regulatory landscape; proactively identifying and communicating legal risks; and acting as a proactive partner in achieving business goals and objectives with sense of urgency but at the same time, protecting Visa’s assets and interests.

  • Deep understanding of local payments regulatory environment; expertise in relevant areas of the law, including commercial, payments regulations, fintechs, antitrust, intellectual property, privacy, antibribery, and employment; and understanding of Visa’s business to generate practical and business-focused legal advice, particularly in connection with (i) Visa’s regulated activities as card brand owner and card payments clearinghouse in Mexico; and (ii) deployment of innovative technological payments solutions, such as digital wallets, fast funds payments, IoT, mobile payments, contactless etc.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, such as client incentive agreements, advertising and promotion agreements, sponsorship agreements, technology agreements, consultancy and contractor agreements, and confidentiality agreements. Ability to create templates and processes to expedite agreement drafting and improve time to market. This also includes development of template/standard documents or adapting U.S. documents to local requirements.

  • Review marketing materials, press releases and public communications to ensure legal protection of Visa’s assets, including its prestigious brand.

  • Coordinate and supervise outside counsel for timeliness, cost-effectiveness, and excellence of service and work product.

  • As needed, provide similar legal support in other markets of Central America & Caribbean.

Qualifications

  • Admitted to practice law in Mexico with LL.M or equivalent degree in Mexico or abroad.
  • 10 to 12 years of commercial legal experience in private practice and/or in-house with multinationals.
  • Experience with Mexican banking, payments and fintechs regulation; knowledge of U.S. or common law ideal.
  • Experience working with regulatory bodies, particularly with Banco de México, Comisión Nacional Bancaria y de Valores y Comisión Federal de Competencia Económica.
  • Excellent legal analytical skills with the ability to untangle and analyze complex legal issues and to integrate legal advice and business knowledge, while providing balanced, strategic advice regarding risks and benefits.

  • First class written and verbal communication skills in Spanish and English, including ability to lead or participate in conference calls to negotiate agreements in both languages.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to build strong working relationships with internal clients at all levels of management and work collaboratively with LAC regional and global teams to ensure effective management within matrix organization over multiple geographical locations.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.

  • Extremely dedicated, organized, and a team oriented.

  • Some travel may be required.
