Job Description

The Gateway Services team is a part of the Network Processing organization. This team works on Extended Access (EA) systems that enable the flow of financial transaction messages and transmission of clearing and settlement files between Visa Clients and Visa. These systems and associated applications are critical in ensuring authorization and subsequent clearing and settlement of all financial transactions. Any impact to these devices from hardware or software issues has a direct effect on Visa’s business. This is a technically challenging environment driven by the need for availability, reliability, security and the extremely low tolerance for any sort of production outage.

The EA system of applications is engineered to be highly available with superlative performance and reliability. System components have been developed using industry standard programming languages such as C++ and Java. Special attention is given to hardening the Linux OS to minimize security threats on a platform that is a light weight version of the OS. The candidate will work alongside other team members to develop and support these complex and mission critical systems and applications.

The Staff SW Engineer will work collaboratively with Development and Support team members and will be responsible for developing mission critical software products and providing the 24X7 3rd level of application support of EA Servers and related systems. This role is critical and fundamental to the availability and health of mission critical systems in Production. Additionally, this position will be responsible for working closely with the QA and Development groups, escalating to management as and when required and writing scripts and tools for monitoring and administration purposes. The Staff SW Engineer will be reporting into the Director for Gateway Services (EA Service Delivery).

Responsibilities

 

  • Work with a team of engineers for the development of the access services provided by the EA applications and systems.

  • Work with cross functional teams to ensure minimum to no disruption in the services in providing 24X7 Level 3 production support for the entire Extended Access service.

  • Diagnose and resolve complex problems in production to meet all Service Level Agreements (SLA).

  • Work closely with the Development team for analyzing, recommending and fixing production issues.

  • Experience in designing and coding of complex mission-critical systems.

  • Implement automated tests into a test framework that verify the application and system.

  • Participate in design and code reviews to ensure that high quality work is delivered.

  • Champion software development best practices such as software development standards, code reviews, secure coding practices, integration test etc.

  • Coordinate with other groups such as QA & Dev-Support team to work towards the common goal.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science or a related field is required. Post graduate degree a plus.

  • 5+ years of experience in providing Level 3 production support for mission critical services and applications. Experience in the area of production financial systems is fundamental.

  • An in-depth and broad background of UNIX operating systems including Linux is an absolute requirement.

  • 5+ years of solid experience with UNIX based scripting languages such as Shell, python or Perl is essential.

  • A strong understanding of TCP/IP and networking technologies is essential together with an excellent ability to analyze and decode network traces.

  • Experience in analyzing detailed and diverse diagnostic data for rapid root cause analysis is required.

  • Experience should include effectively working with a diverse range of functions and groups including: Software Development, QA, Engineering and a range of Operational groups.

  • Experience in capacity planning and management of production environments, including load testing exercises is required.

  • Coding experience in a high level programming language such as Java, C or C++ will have advantage.

  • Good documentation skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Flexibility, self-motivated, high work standards, attention to detail, ability to perform as an individual contributor or as a member or leader of a team.

  • Ability to work in a technical leadership role on multiple concurrent assignments with both technical and business staff.
