Job Description
OVERVIEW
As a Business News Editor, you will lead and manage a team of reporters covering some of the most dynamic and impactful beats in global business: technology, energy, general business news, and careers/workplace trends. With strong news judgment, you will steer coverage that resonates with a global business audience and supports a growing, subscription-focused strategy—prioritizing distinctive, high-value journalism that drives loyalty and repeat engagement.
This role also carries a strong audience and distribution focus, ensuring that CNBC’s journalism not only breaks news but also reaches and engages audiences where they are, across platforms and formats, with an emphasis on converting and retaining subscribers. You will be a steady, reliable leader, guiding the team through both breaking news and in-depth feature coverage.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead coverage across tech, general business news, and careers/workplace beats, shaping stories that set the agenda for a global business audience.
Be audience and data obsessed, using analytics to inform editorial decisions and optimize story performance.
Manage and mentor reporters, providing editorial guidance, feedback, and career development support.
Support reporters in building sources with a view to deliver agenda-setting scoops and analysis for our readers.
Edit stories to CNBC style, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and impact under tight deadlines.
Work cross-functionally with TV, video, and social media teams to produce multiplatform journalism that maximizes reach and impact.
Develop forward-looking editorial plans around key news events, industry trends, and policy shifts on your beat.
Generate and refine story ideas that combine sharp reporting, original analysis, and global relevance.
Maintain high editorial standards, ensuring accuracy, balance, and compliance with CNBC’s guidelines.
Contribute to newsroom leadership, helping shape CNBC International’s digital strategy and culture.
Audience & Engagement Responsibilities
Assist in curating, editing, and publishing content across social platforms (Twitter/X, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, etc.), ensuring posts are accurate, engaging, and consistent with CNBC’s editorial voice.
Curate and update the CNBC.com homepage and app front to highlight the most impactful and relevant stories.
Write, edit, and send timely, high-impact mobile push alerts.
Monitor, analyze, and act on audience data via tools like Pars.ly and internal dashboards.
Edit and repackage stories for different formats (social threads, SEO-optimized headlines, vertical video, etc.).
Stay ahead of digital trends, platform shifts, and emerging audience behaviors.
Collaborate closely with TV and Digital teams to align promotion and platform strategy for maximum visibility.
Qualifications
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
Extensive knowledge of CNBC’s editorial and programming priorities, with a strong interest in financial markets, economics, technology, and politics.
Strong understanding of US and APAC companies, major technology trends, energy, broader business news, and workplace and career trends. Last bullet can be deleted.
Proven capability to perform full and substantive edits under tight deadlines, including reworking leads, refining story angles, ensuring editorial balance, and restructuring content to enhance relevance and appeal for CNBC’s readers.
Expertise in writing sharp, compelling headlines and copy editing/proofreading, with a keen eye for identifying and correcting errors, typos, and inconsistencies.
Good multitasking and prioritization skills to manage a wide range of tasks effectively under tight deadlines while maintaining composure and efficiency in a fast-paced news environment.
Collaborative team player who builds positive and respectful relationships with colleagues across departments and locations, ensuring the website operates seamlessly and maintains high standards of accuracy.
Excellent verbal communication and organizational skills, combined with strong research and succinct writing skills.
Demonstrated self-starter, with the confidence to make informed decisions in a fast-paced news environment.
Flexible and willing to occasionally work different shifts when required, which some start very early in the morning or on weekends.
Knowledge of social media platforms, especially X.
DESIRED ATTRIBUTES
While not essential for this role, candidates with experience or proficiency in the following attributes tend to excel in this position.
Seven (7) or more years of experience in a related role or function with two (2) or more years of operational and/or people management experience.
Experience editing breaking news and feature stories and making editorial decisions in a fast-paced newsroom.
Experience in updating websites, news editing or hot-seating.
Familiarity with content management systems.
Background in working for a leading business news organization.
Experience in overseeing news coverage and making editorial decisions.
