Job Description
CNBC is seeking an experienced Technology Reporter to cover the expanding network of companies led by Elon Musk and help readers understand the technological, financial, and regulatory forces shaping their evolution. From Tesla’s work in autonomy, robotics, and energy systems, to SpaceX’s launch and satellite businesses, to emerging artificial intelligence efforts competing with firms such as OpenAI and Google, Musk-led ventures sit at the intersection of innovation, capital markets, and public policy.
This is a multimedia role requiring reporting and production for television, digital and social platforms. It is based in San Francisco.
This beat requires rigorous reporting and analytical perspective. Investors often view Musk’s leadership and long-term vision as central to valuation, while regulators, competitors, and safety advocates are increasing scrutiny of emerging technologies, governance practices, and deployment risks. Coverage should examine both technological ambition and real-world implications, helping audiences understand what developments mean for markets, industry, and society.
This role is centered on scoops, step-back thinking, and high-level analysis—connecting original reporting, market signals, regulatory developments, and product advances into clear, authoritative journalism that explains what is happening and why it matters.
The ideal candidate is a big-picture thinker and aggressive reporter who can break news, cultivate sources, and surface insights that go beyond the daily cycle. This role requires intellectual curiosity, strong news judgment, and the ability to write with clarity and authority about complex technological and financial topics—without oversimplifying or overstating their impact.
Responsibilities
- Break news and deliver exclusive reporting on Musk-led companies and related technologies
- Develop deep sourcing across industry, regulatory, investor, and technology circles
- Move quickly and flexibly when news happens and succinctly distill that for the audience
- Produce analytical stories that connect technology developments, business news, and market impact
- Collaborate with CNBC reporters and editors to deepen coverage and enterprise reporting
- Translate complex technological and regulatory developments into clear, accessible journalism
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Significant experience covering technology, markets, or corporate power at a major news organization
- Proven ability to break scoops and deliver agenda-setting journalism
- Strong understanding of technology sectors such as AI, autonomy, aerospace, and manufacturing
- Experience cultivating sources across industry, government, and investment communities
- Excellent news judgment and the ability to distinguish signal from hype
Desired Characteristics
- Familiarity with capital markets and venture ecosystems
- Comfort interpreting technical concepts, financial disclosures, and policy frameworks
- Experience delivering sharp, compelling stories on television
This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from our office at 1 Market Plaza in San Francisco a minimum of three days per week. Salary range: $200,000-225,000.
