Job Description

Wood Mackenzie has an exciting opportunity for a Head of Data Governance with excellent problem solving, teamwork and leadership skills to join our industry-leading data analytics organization. Wood Mackenzie are an industry-leading data analytics company that provides analysis and insight on the world’s natural resources. Our global team are working on a next generation, data analysis & visualization platform utilized by our customers to drive billion-dollar decisions.

About the role

Working within our Data group, you will be responsible for data related policies, oversight and compliance, and collaborating cross-functionally to implement Data Governance practices into our processes, technologies, and role responsibilities.

You will be collaborating with teams that manage our shared data assets to provide mentorship on Data Governance practices, including tracking lineage and license terms, quality standards, usage and access control.  Your governance policies and oversight on compliance will ensure that our customers, colleagues, and suppliers of data can trust and rely upon our data for making important business decisions.

Role Objectives

  • Provide strategic vision and leadership and in data governance across the enterprise, to ensure proper management of data resources
  • Provide thoughtful input to the overall strategy and technology direction for the ongoing enhancement of our existing data assets and development of new data assets
  • Work in collaboration with cross functional teams and wider stakeholders to design, evolve and communicate how we govern data, enforce our policies, and audit and report on compliance
  • Translating long term business vision to a strategic and tactical data roadmap to continuously improve the quality of our data assets
  • Develop policies and strategies for putting the following Data Governance priorities into practice
    • Analytics-Ready” data – define, evangelize, and enforce data quality standards that measure the quality and usability of data against the customer needs to realize the value proposition from that data (better decision making)
    • Third Party licensing and data usage – ensure the licensing terms we agree to with third parties meet the business needs and that we are in compliance with said terms
    • Data Management Processes – define, evangelize, and enforce data processes, such as how data is staged and archived, organized in the data lake, conventions for mapping, standardizing, and normalizing data, etc.
  • Understanding of the issues businesses face and experience working with them to create data standards and negotiate commercially beneficial data licensing arrangements with our suppliers
  • Promote a culture of collaboration by contributing to process design activities of wider technology efforts
  • Champion career development programs to retain top talent
  • Inspire a culture of continuous learning, especially in data protection and quality practices
  • Build, lead and motivate high performing teams to deliver high quality outcomes
  • Drive groups of disparate interests to decisions, and clearly communicating and seeing those decisions through to impact
  • Maintaining strong expertise and knowledge of current and emerging governance practices
  • Manage stakeholders at different levels (C-level, SVPs, VPs, Principal Engineers) within Wood Mackenzie and Verisk

Qualifications

About you and how you can excel in this role

This is a key hire for our Data leadership team and so to be successful in this role you will have excellent leadership and stakeholder management capabilities.

  • Strong technical foundation gained in a senior data governance leadership role with proven experience in data platforms and analytics.
  • Track record of successful delivery with enterprise data management initiatives in organisations with legacy data estates
  • Significant experience implementing data governance programs
  • Experience managing data governance initiatives in cross functional and cloud based environments
  • Technical skills in data visualization and quality reporting, plus background or prior experience in disciplines being governed such as data engineering, data stewardship, and data science
  • Manage competing priorities, multiple work streams and meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
