Job Description

We are looking for an Iron Ore and Steel Principal Consultant to join our Global Bulks Research team.  This role will be based in our Beijing or Shanghai office. As part of a global team, the bulks team provides clients with high-quality commercial analysis of the steel, iron ore, and coal sectors, to help clients to make better decision to secure their business success.

 

About the role

Reporting to Head of Steel Research, this is a senior position within Wood Mackenzie. The role sits within the Wood Mackenzie’s Bulks Research Team with colleagues based in China, Australia, Singapore, UK, India and, United States.

The primary responsibility is to be Woodmac’s steel and iron ore technical expert. The role involves developing and maintaining models to forecast steel plant operating costs, revenue, carbon emissions, raw material requirements, capital expenditure and production volumes.

You will apply solid analytical capabilities and knowledge of the steel and iron ore industries to produce analysis of the market to include: supply, demand and price forecasts. The role also involves developing and maintaining models to forecast steel plant operating costs, revenue, carbon emissions, raw material requirements, production volumes, and raw material value-in-use adjustments.

As a senior member of the bulks team, a willingness to train and develop junior team members is a must.

You will be establishing and maintaining contacts with industry stakeholders to acquire proprietary data and knowledge.

You will apply communication of the iron ore and steel team’s research to clients via written reports and through presentations (including webcalls, podcasts, presentations) and face-to-face meetings.

Qualifications

About you and how you can excel in this role

You are degree-qualified in a relevant discipline (e.g. Metallurgical Engineering / Mining / Geology or Economics / Business), and you have experience of steel and iron ore markets through employment at a resource, steel manufacturing, consulting company or in the financial sector.  Previous experience in technical marketing within the steel and iron ore industry will be a distinct advantage.

You have strong knowledge of the technical aspects of steelmaking and a track record in analysing steel and raw materials (iron ore, met coal, scrap) markets.  An ability to interact with industry participants at a variety of levels to both obtain information and to communicate insight is a key requirement.

You have participated in supporting sales and marketing activities and have assisted in the on-going development of client relationships. You have co-operated with Consulting, Sales and Marketing teams in the Business Development process.

You have visited and engaged with clients and prospects to foster the exchange of information.

Most importantly, you have computer literate with in depth knowledge of MS Office products.
