    Job Description

    To plan, coordinate and implement the Health and Safety activities for the Toronto Biosolid and Toronto SSO plants in order to improve employee safety, mitigate the Company’s risk and to meet all regulatory requirements. This position is a regular presence on site and works collaboratively to support the operation teams in achieving Environmental compliance and Health and Safety Excellence.

    The main requirements of the role are:

    1. Plans, coordinates and implements all activities specific to the Occupational Health and Safety Program for the site. Program includes hazard recognition and control, accident and incident reporting, investigations, and the development and implementation of OHS controls. 
    2. Ensures the Toronto plants site compliance with Veolia corporate safety policies and procedures through development of site specific procedures.
    3.  Provides day-to-day coaching, as well as medium and long term planning with the site management team to deliver a safe operation while adhering to the Company’s core and safety values ● Proactive focus on environmental and industrial risk activities in an effort to eliminate risk ● Develops, implements, and monitors H&S objectives and targets for the Toronto plants
    4.  Maintains Emergency Response Training (ERT) programs. Oversees and evaluates ERT drills
    5. Conducts or provides guidance for incident investigation as required. Maintains accurate injury reporting with internal and external stakeholders
    6. Proactively promotes through example a safe work ethic, attitude, and workplace. Supervises employees’ compliance with all safety policies, standards, and procedures to achieve a safe work environment and safety for all staff and visitors as well as the Company’s, Client’s and Regulatory Agencies safe work objectives and requirements.
    7. Proactively models and maintains effective working relationships and communications with peers, management, staff, other Company departments, and client representatives. Models effective conflict resolution skills and effectively resolves any conflicts in a timely and respectful manner to achieve positive and healthy working relationships and workplace environment. 
    8. Maintains confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures. 
    9. Conducts or participates in audits, Hazop’s, safety reviews, pre-start-up audits and safety walk throughs. Generates inspection and audit findings and maintains follow-up for timely close-out.
    10. Works with Human Resources to manage disabilities/ modified work programs and incident investigations 
    11. Work with Human Resources to ensure OHS training planning and compliance 
    12. Participates in developing/editing/revising/ reviewing and approving as applicable all plant Environmental Health and Safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) 
    13. Participates in developing/editing/revising/ reviewing and approving as applicable all plant Environmental compliance documents 
    14. Actively supports other initiatives of the Plants to promote a healthy and positive work environment and enhance employee morale and engagement 
    15. Acts upon, in a timely manner, any unsafe conditions observed. 
    16. Completes other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    Knowledge, skills and experience: 

    • Minimum of three(3) years’ progressive experience in a related health and safety role within an industrial facility and/or regulated environment. 
    • JHSC Certification Part 1 & 2 
    • Prior experience in an industrial process facility is a definite asset. 
    • First Aid, CPR, WHMIS, Respiratory Protective Equipment, Personal Protective Equipment, Aerial Lift and Emergency Response training certifications are required.
    • Possess and maintain current and valid Health and Safety Designation issued from an accredited organization within Canada such as CRSP or equivalent.
    • Post Secondary Education in Occupational Health & Safety or Industrial Hygiene.
    • Thorough knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, especially the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, Code and Regulations. 
    • Intermediate level computer skills to operate MS Office Suite (especially Outlook, Excel, and Word) and program-specific software. 
    • Ability to work on-call and outside of regular business hours as the facility is operational 24/7. 
    • Strong customer service attitude and commitment to providing exceptional customer service and quality results 
    • Excellent interpersonal and conflict management skills to facilitate working effectively with a wide range and number of people, including peers and managers, employees, and other departments, divisions, and management within all levels of the organization. 
    • Strong leadership and communication (both verbal and written) skills to facilitate and promote open discussions, and to effect pro-active management on a daily basis. 
    • Effective time management, decision-making, and planning and organizing skills. 
    • Attentiveness to details and ability to manage a diverse workload within a fast-paced environment with changing multiple priorities and frequent interruptions.
    • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision.
    • Proven organizational and creative-problem solving skills. 
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures. 
    • Ability to complete all conditions of employment including criminal record check, negative alcohol and drug test, current and clean Class 5 driver’s license, pre-employment medical, immunizations, and background check.
