Job Description
The purpose of the Protection Services Superintendent Specialised (Surveillance) role is to supervise Central Surveillance Unit shift activities and ensure the effective use of CCTV, body-scanning, X-ray, product-movement tracking, electronic access and alarm-monitoring systems. The role monitors and analyses activities in risk areas to detect crime, security breaches, process deviations and safety concerns, and coordinates the required response. It also allocates and supervises the work of surveillance employees, maintains accurate records and supports investigations to protect employees and company assets. Due to the nature of the work, the role may involve company and personal risk.
1. Safety: Consistent application of Safety & Health principles in all discipline interactions and take personal responsibility for safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and elimination of fatalities.
2. Performance and Delivery
Surveillance Operations
• Supervise shift activities across CCTV surveillance, body-scanning, X-ray monitoring, electronic access, alarm monitoring and product-movement tracking.
• Allocate work and adjust shift priorities to ensure that all surveillance activities and operational requirements are adequately covered.
• Monitor high-risk areas and analyse employee movement, behaviour, system alerts and surveillance footage to identify suspicious activity, security breaches, procedural deviations and safety concerns.
• Ensure that surveillance holds, incidents, alarms and product-movement discrepancies are reported promptly and referred for the appropriate operational response or investigation.
• Support internal and criminal investigations by reviewing footage, gathering evidence, preparing statements and testifying in disciplinary hearings or court proceedings when required.
Shift and System Administration
• Conduct shift briefings and handovers, communicate management instructions and ensure effective continuity between shifts.
• Maintain accurate shift, incident, surveillance, body-scanner and product-movement records, reports and supporting evidence.
• Monitor the condition and use of surveillance equipment, conduct system checks and report faults or irregularities for corrective action.
• Ensure the accurate use of surveillance systems and databases and protect the integrity, confidentiality and security of information and evidence.
• Coordinate emergency responses and communication between relevant operations and stakeholders during security or emergency incidents.
People Supervision
• Set clear work expectations, allocate tasks fairly and monitor employee attendance, conduct, competence and performance.
• Coach, mentor and train employees in surveillance systems, operating standards, procedures and new work practices.
• Support employee induction, development and career growth, and identify opportunities to improve employee capability and motivation.
• Maintain positive employee relations through open communication, fair discipline, conflict resolution and respect for diversity.
• Ensure that employees work professionally in a safe, productive and respectful environment.
Compliance and Improvement
• Implement and monitor compliance with Protection Services policies, procedures, standards, instructions and applicable legal requirements.
• Apply the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, Use of Force Procedure and Valterra Platinum
Rules of Engagement.
• Review surveillance trends and security indicators and recommend practical improvements to procedures, camera positioning, lighting, systems and site security controls.
• Support surveillance audits, system-effectiveness reviews, improvement projects, contingency plans and the implementation of new technologies.
• Use resources responsibly, support agreed budget requirements and stay informed of relevant legislative and technological developments.

• Ensure compliance with internal and external regulatory, legislative and permitting requirements.

Qualifications
Prescribed:
• Grade 12.
• NQF Level 5 qualification in Investigation, Policing, Security, Law or a related field.
• PSIRA Grade A registration.
Desirable:
• Advanced CCTV Surveillance and Body Language training.
Certifications:

•Valid EB/Code 08 driver’s licence.
Desirable
• Protection Services Induction.
Experience:
• Minimum five years' experience in a security, surveillance, or related environment.
• At least three years' experience in a control-room, surveillance, or central monitoring environment.
• Experience in CCTV surveillance, body-scanner or X-ray monitoring, alarm monitoring, and incident response.
• Experience supporting investigations through evidence gathering, footage review, and reporting.
Technical knowledge required for role:
• CCTV surveillance, body-scanning, X-ray monitoring, electronic access, alarm systems and control-room operating principles.
• Surveillance monitoring, behavioral analysis, suspect profiling, intelligence gathering and incident-detection principles.
• Evidence gathering, preservation, statement writing and investigation-support requirements.
• Security-related legislation, policies, procedures and standards, including VPSHR, Use of Force requirements and Valterra Platinum Rules of Engagement.
• Emergency response, incident escalation, contingency planning and operational communication requirements.
• Surveillance system administration, data integrity, recordkeeping and information-security requirements.
Technical Skills:
• Supervise shifts, allocate work and coordinate surveillance, body-scanner, alarm and product-movement monitoring activities.
• Operate and oversee CCTV, X-ray, electronic access, alarm-monitoring and related surveillance systems.
• Observe and analyse footage, images, behaviour and system information to identify risks, anomalies and suspicious activity.
• Gather, preserve and present evidence, prepare clear statements and reports, and support disciplinary or court proceedings.
• Coordinate incident and emergency responses and communicate effectively in spoken and written English.
• Coach employees and use Microsoft Office and relevant operational systems to manage records, reports and shift performance.
