Job Description
Sport Tutor – Personal Training/Fitness Coaching
Location: Wellington Central
Full-time | Fixed-Term | NZIS Wellington
Please note this is a fixed-term position running until 11 December 2026.
About the role:
As a Sport Tutor, you will be delivering our Personal Training / Fitness Coach programmes to inspire and teach the next generation of Fitness professionals.
You will be walking into an energetic environment where value is placed on delivering outcomes rather than micro-managing work and tasks. You will be given autonomy to work in a way that gets the best results and will be expected to take responsibility and make things happen.
In this role, you will mentor a group of motivated students completing their studies in the Personal Training field. Some of your key responsibilities will be to:
- Deliver NZQA learning objectives in a way that brings our curriculum alive for the student
- Mentoring students and tracking/monitoring of our student success
- Stay abreast of latest industry/teaching trends and recommendations
- Meeting NZIS targets for student achievement and work placement
- Relevant sport, exercise, and recreation Industry stakeholder engagement
Qualifications
About you:
You must have the ability to operate independently or as part of a team and be able to mentor students aspiring to pursue careers in the fitness industry. You will describe yourself as an enthusiastic and motivated self-starter who has a passion for the sports, fitness and recreation industries and have will have networks within the sport, exercise and/or recreation communities.
Required qualifications/skills/experience:
- Minimum New Zealand Certificate in Exercise (Level 5) or equivalent
- REPs registration preferred
- Current industry experience in personal training or exercise coaching with experience coaching clients with a range of fitness levels and goals
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, exercise prescription, and programme design
- Understanding of safe exercise practice, client assessment, and behaviour change strategies
- Knowledge of exercise considerations for common health conditions and higher-needs clients
- Excellent practical coaching and communication skills
- Ability to engage and motivate learners in both classroom and gym environments
- Adult teaching qualification (or willingness to complete one) advantageous
Ideally, you will have teacher training or relevant student engagement experience, however NZIS can provide this for the suitable candidate. An ability to connect with tertiary students through creative, exciting and motivational delivery methods is essential.
