Position Summary

Reporting in a matrix to one of UHN’s Executive Vice Presidents and the President & CEO, the Vice President, Clinical (the “Vice President”) is an executive of UHN and a member of UHN’s Executive Leadership Forum (ELF). As a member of ELF, the incumbent contributes to and collaborates on decision-making that affects UHN as a whole: priorities, resources and strategic decisions.

As a Vice President, Clinical, the incumbent will lead a specific clinical program or programs (the “portfolio”) in coordination with program Medical Directors and Research leads, as applicable. The specific portfolio that the incumbent will be immediately responsible for is focused on leading UHN’s Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and UHN’s Complex Continuing Care operations, although changes in portfolio may be made in the future.

Duties

  • Strategic Leadership: As a member of the Executive Leadership Forum of UHN, the Vice President, Clinical, is responsible to contribute to decisions regarding enterprise-wide matters including resource allocation, priorities and strategy execution. These contributions are made in collaboration with other executives of UHN.
  • Clinical Leadership: As the executive leader of a clinical portfolio or program, the Vice President forms half of a leadership dyad with the program Medical Director. This dyad is accountable for outcomes in the following domains.
  • Clinical Quality and Patient Outcomes: Together with the program Medical Director, the Vice President monitors quality management programs, facilitates processes for early risk identification, develops risk mitigation strategies and is ultimately responsible for ensuring clinical quality and patient outcomes are optimized and meet or exceed established targets.
  • Financial Planning and Management: As part of the leadership dyad, the Vice President leads the development of an annual operating plan and budget for the program while managing resources to optimize clinical quality and patient experience while avoiding deficit spending.
  • People Leadership: The Vice President holds the highest operations and line position in the portfolio. As such, the Vice President is ultimately responsible for outcomes in the portfolio in the following domains, subject to UHN policies, programs and strategic priorities.
    • Promoting and strengthening UHN Culture
    • Establishing standards of excellence
    • Recognizing and rewarding high performance
    • Ensuring a positive staff experience and high levels of engagement
    • Ensuring staff safety
    • Ensuring a culture of identifying and developing talent
    • Supporting positive Labour Relations
    • Promoting measures to minimize voluntary turnover - in particular, of top talent.
    • Executing the implications of strategic initiatives that affect the portfolio.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in health administration, business administration, public administration, or a related field required; doctoral degree or relevant professional designation considered an asset.
  • Strong competency in managing clinical programs within complex, matrixed organizational structures, supported by a minimum of seven (7) years of progressively senior leadership experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive senior leadership experience within a complex academic health sciences centre or comparable healthcare organization, with full accountability for clinical operations and performance.
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience leading change within large, complex, and matrixed environments.
  • Demonstrated success leading large, multi-disciplinary portfolios with responsibility for quality and safety, operational performance, people leadership, and financial stewardship.
  • Proven expertise in financial planning and management, including development and oversight of significant operating budgets and delivery of balanced, sustainable results.
  • Deep knowledge of healthcare funding models, regulatory and accreditation frameworks, risk management, and quality improvement methodologies.
  • Experience working within an academic environment, with an understanding of the integration of clinical care, research, and education.
  • Ability to lead effectively in dyad partnership with physician leaders and collaborate with research leadership in a triad model.
  • Enterprise thinker with the ability to contribute meaningfully to organization-wide strategy, resource allocation, and system transformation initiatives.
  • Exceptional people leadership skills with a demonstrated record of accomplishment in building high performing, engaged, and inclusive teams.
  • Strong executive presence with highly developed communication, influence, and stakeholder engagement skills, including experience working with boards, senior executives, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, staff safety, and a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
