Position Summary

The Senior Director, New Proton/Particle Therapy Facility will lead the planning, design and delivery of a new approximately 770,000-square-foot Proton/Particle Therapy facility at UHN. This facility is slated to be the first of its kind in Canada and is to be built in partnership with The Hospital for Sick Children, Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario and Ontario Health – Cancer Care Ontario. The facility will provide particle therapy treatment to pediatric and adult patients from across Ontario. The facility will be housed in the lower 3 basement levels of a new podium structure that will extend 7 stories above grade and connect directly to UHN and the Hospital for Sick Children. The proton and particle therapy equipment is large in scale and complex in nature. Each potential vendor has different specifications and requirements and so it will be essential to partner with the chosen vendor to design the building around the equipment and then continue working with them through construction and into operationalization of the facility. It will be the responsibility of the Senior Director to aid in the procurement of and negotiation with an equipment vendor and manage consultants and contractors for design and construction of the building.

Reporting to the Chief Planning Officer, they will oversee project management, design, construction, contract administration, and ensure adherence to scope, budget, and schedule. This role involves collaboration with clinical leadership, research, education, and other key stakeholders to support UHN’s programs and services. The Senior Director works closely with FM-PRO leadership to align projects with UHN’s strategic priorities while managing available capital resources. They are accountable for the design and construction program’s successful outcomes, maintaining direct oversight of processes, procedures, and project delivery.

Duties

  • Lead the project management and delivery of the 770,000-square-foot New Proton/Particle Therapy Facility at UHN.
  • Work with UHN procurement to bring on an equipment vendor first and then consultants and contractors for design and construction
  • Oversee contract administration for Particle therapy equipment vendor, Design and Construction consultants, additional Furniture and Equipment, ensuring adherence to scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Collaborate with clinical leadership, research, education, operations and other key stakeholders to support UHN’s programs and services. Also manage external stakeholders and work collaboratively with the project partners
  • Ensure successful project outcomes by managing available capital resources and spatial constraints in alignment with UHN’s strategic priorities.
  • Work closely with other stakeholders to coordinate space and capital planning efforts.
  • Maintain direct oversight of design and construction program processes and procedures, ensuring accountability for project delivery and operational readiness.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in architecture or engineering or recognized equivalent required.
  • A minimum of 10 years progressive practical experience in the field of planning, design, construction and project management of a variety of capital construction and equipment installation projects.
  • 5 or more years of related experience of managing medium to large multifunctional project management teams in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment, such as a hospital or clinic with 24/7/365 operational environments.
  • Membership in Professional Engineers of Ontario or Ontario Association Architects preferred.
  • Experience in the healthcare sector or the public sector, with knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or departmental policies is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Broader Public Sector Procurement Directives and Supply Chain Guidelines is an asset
  • Experience with Ministry of Health (MOH) Capital Planning highly desirable
  • Excellent change management, leadership and motivational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication including report writing and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Exercise initiative and good judgment with ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to negotiate in a matrix environment; adaptability and flexibility.
  • Ability to implement changes and work effectively in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance with UHN standards.
