The role of Nursing in clinical trials continues to evolve as a growing profession within nursing.  It expands the nurse’s knowledge base, professional practice, autonomy and utilizes key elements of nursing practice such as patient assessment, critical thinking and holistic patient care.  What is unique to this role is that all of these functions are within the realm of clinical trials. The Clinical Research Coordinator III (Nurse) will collaborate with the Principal Investigator and research team to assume responsibility for assigned patient management in several research studies in the Division of Neurosurgery in Toronto Western Hospital, University Health Network.

Studies include- pharma-sponsored Phase 1 to 3 Clinical trials as well as Investigator-initiated studies involving Functional Neurosurgical Interventions for conditions such as Dementia, Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.

Responsibilities include: administering motor and psychological assessments; collecting and shipping samples; monitoring vital signs; administering intravenous treatments following the study protocol; and collecting data for a database and follow-up patients after surgery at regular interval under MDs’ supervision.  Furthermore, the role entails providing assistance to the research team in delivering clinical care to patients involved in clinical trials, source documentation, adhering to UHN policy and ICH/GCP guidelines.

Duties

  • Collaborates with PI/MD and multidisciplinary health care team in the support of patient participants (e.g., sample collection, vital signs, administration of  health assessments & questionnaires before and after intervention)
  • Patient monitoring and education in Functional Neurosurgical procedures such as Deep Brain Stimulation and Focused Ultrasound
  • Administration and monitoring of IV treatments as per study protocol
  • Coordinates and executes all aspects of study visit as per approved protocol and UHN policy and ICH/GCP guidelines  (e.g., scheduling patient visits; data collection;  source and electronic CRF documentation;  administering  questionnaires; documentation of adverse events & deviations)
  • Collects data for a database and follow-up patients after surgery at regular interval under MDs’ supervision
  • Educates patients on Functional neurosurgery Interventions
  • Interacts with both internal and external contacts primarily to exchange and/or clarify information, and resolves problems within the scope of authority

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with a minimum of 3 (three) years experience.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Holds recognized certification in clinical research (e.g., ACRP or SOCRA)
  • Bachelor’s degree, or recognized equivalent, and current certificate of competence (licensure/registration) from a college legislated under the Regulated Health Professions Act) is required
  • Excellent phlebotomy, IV and CVL skills
  • Surgical and/or Neurology clinical experience is an asset
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills required
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to utilize the nursing process in planning, implementing and evaluating patient care
  • Evidence of good physical assessment, psychosocial assessment and patient/family teaching skills
  • Autonomous clinical critical thinking ability
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Possess creative and  problem-solving skills with the ability to learn quickly and work independently
  • Excellent prioritization skills with the ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks while meeting tight deadlines
  • Ability to work under pressure with great attention to detail
  • Training in ICH/GCP guidelines an asset
  • Client service oriented
  • Leads self and peers by conduct and example
