Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Uncommon Accounting and Payroll team is based in NYC and provides support to 2,500+ staff members across 55 schools and the Home Office (HO). Working in close collaboration with regional and school leaders, as well as HO managers, the team provides high-quality services. Position:

Summary of Role: The Payroll Specialist will support the Payroll Manager on all things payroll and pension! This includes associated bookkeeping/accounting functions. They ensure the accurate and timely processing and recording of the company’s payroll! In addition, they will provide support for the audit process and will work closely with others to assist with team initiative, projects, and reporting.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of the semi-monthly payroll processing and provide comprehensive quality control to achieve on time, accurate payrolls.
  • Perform daily payroll department operations to include but not limited to new hires, terminations, status changes, garnishments and benefits.
  • Assist with Time and Attendance requests
  • Respond to payroll data requests
  • Handle Quarter End and Year End Payroll processing
  • Build all related journal entries
  • Prepare for and support the annual audit

Qualifications

Required knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Experience with Payroll Accounting programs (preferably Workday, ADP Workforce Now and Time and Attendance)
  • Understanding of accounting principles and experience with journal entries
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word)
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Strong organization and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Ability to build and maintain systems that improve efficiency
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work well in a team structure
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment; flexible, able to work autonomously as well as take direction as needed

2) Educational background:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (preferred)

3) Experience:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience hands on payroll processing
