Job Description
The role: Join the program that gave so many of Canada’s journalists their start. The Toronto Star is looking for emerging journalists who combine traditional reporting grit with digital agility.
This is a paid contract position based in Toronto for emerging journalists with less than five years of professional experience. You will work alongside full-time staff, earn bylines and produce high-impact work from the start. Early morning, evening and weekend work will be required.
Details:
- Duration: One-year contract starting in mid to late September 2026
- Location: Positions are based out of Toronto
- Salary: $55,762.20 (Unifor Local 87-M)
- Deadline to apply: 5 p.m. on April 15, 2026
Qualifications
Who we are looking for:
- Digital savvy: You understand how a story lives on the mobile app just as well as how it lives in print.
- Data-informed: You can use audience insights to sharpen your angles, not to chase clicks.
- Multi-platform: You are comfortable with written text, but you can also snap a photo, cut a vertical video or scrape a dataset.
- Daily news mindset: You’re ready to jump into breaking and live news, pitch daily stories and tackle general assignments from desks across the newsroom.
- Early career: You have less than five years of professional experience. You must have some journalism experience beyond school — previous internships or roles in a range of organizations, freelance or non-traditional outlets.
Application requirements:
To apply, upload a single PDF in the resume field to our online portal containing:
- Your pitch (cover letter): In 100 words or less, tell us what you bring to the Star. Why you? Why now? (Note: We value brevity. Consider this your first assigned word count. Don’t go over.)
- Resume: Include your email, phone and current city
- Three published clippings:
- Links/clippings must be accessible (no paywalls)
- We want to see journalism, not homework. Clips from campus newspapers or independent/community outlets are welcome; unpublished essays/assignments written for class grades are not.
Application should demonstrate:
- A range of story-telling skills, with a strong emphasis on news coverage
- Proven ability to report thoroughly, write well and organize information
- Multimedia experience
- A demonstrated commitment to journalism as a career
- Strong interpersonal skills
