Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.
Job Description
As the International Tax Specialist you will develop and implement tax risk management strategies, ensure seamless global tax integration, and lead specialised tax projects to support strategic business decisions and adherence to evolving regulations.
More of your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting in the preparation and submission of tax returns, including corporate income tax, IRP6’s, carbon tax, mining royalty tax, and dividends tax, ensuring adherence to local and international laws
- Preparing monthly tax reports and reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and completeness
- Providing tax advisory services on cross-border transactions, mergers, and acquisitions (M&A), and structuring of foreign operations
- Reviewing the impact of new tax legislation, such as the OECD Pillar Two guidelines, and advise on compliance with minimum effective tax rates in relevant jurisdictions
- Assisting in establishing and maintaining tax controls framework to manage and mitigate tax risks, including BEPS/Transfer Pricing compliance and CFC taxation
- Collaborating on n periodically updating Transfer Pricing studies to reflect current market conditions
- Monitoring legislative changes and ensure that the organisation’s tax strategy and compliance activities are up-to-date and aligned with best practices
- Contributing to achieving financial targets and optimising the organisation’s tax position to enhance profitability by assisting with global tax rate reconciliations and ensure accurate tax reporting in financial statements
- Providing tax input into liquidity and impairment models for financial planning purposes as well as supporting the identification and implementation of tax-efficient strategies for client billing and revenue remittance
- Ensuring cohesive tax management and integration across all global entities and operations by supporting the tax management of the marketing entity in Dubai and the Australian subsidiaries, ensuring compliance with local tax regulations
- Leading and managing specialised tax projects, ensuring successful implementation and compliance
- Reviewing of agreements that will impact the business to ensure tax optimization and tax compliance of these agreements
- Managing the organisation's participation in international tax initiatives, such as the OECD's Pillar Two guidelines, ensuring compliance with new global tax standards
- Ensuring fill compliance with CbCR regulations by preparing and submitting accurate reports in accordance with international standards
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance / Accounting or other relevant discipline (NQF Level 7)
- CA (SA) / CFA or post-graduate degree in Tax, Finance or Accounting or other relevant discipline (NQF Level 8/9) (Advantageous)
Experience
- Minimum 6 years’ experience in the management of international tax in a listed environment
- Experience in Mining Taxation

- Advanced knowledge and expertise in the Tax discipline, through tax planning and advisory skills, tax compliance skills and tax governance skills
- Advanced data extraction and analysis techniques to draw conclusions and optimise tax performance
- Proficient knowledge of M&A data & financial modelling
- Advanced knowledge of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and other relevant accounting standards
- Advanced knowledge of Management Accounting processes incl. budgeting and forecasting
- Proficient knowledge of mining and/or extractive industries
