Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We are seeking a Lecturer in European Studies, specialising in European literatures and visual cultures, with expertise in Gender Studies. This is a permanent position commencing January 2027, or by negotiation.

This is an opportunity to contribute to the development and delivery of European Studies across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, bringing expertise in transnational European contexts across any period from the medieval to the present. You will contribute to core European Studies curriculum, alongside teaching in areas such as French and/or Spanish literatures, comparative literature and drama, film and media.

You will also contribute to the Faculty’s cross-disciplinary Gender Studies programme, including teaching the core second-year course in feminist and gender theory on a biennial basis. The role provides scope to develop research and teaching across a broad range of European literary and visual cultures, while contributing to the intellectual life of the School and Faculty.

Key areas of contribution include:

• Teaching and curriculum development across European Studies, French and/or Spanish literatures, comparative literature and drama, film and media, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Contributing to the Gender Studies programme, including its core second-year feminist and gender theory course.
• Developing a productive, high-quality research profile and contributing to the wider research culture of the School.
• Supervising PhD and other postgraduate students across a broad range of periods and topics.
• Contributing to academic service, leadership and citizenship within the School, Faculty and wider University.

The workload allocation for this position is 40% teaching, 40% research and 20% service.

Remuneration will be commensurate with experience and achievements and aligned with the University's Academic Standards policy.

It will be in the range of Lecturer (L): NZ$99,788 - NZ$119,204 per annum.

He kōrero mōu | About you

You will be a collegial academic with expertise in European literatures and visual cultures, and a strong commitment to high-quality research and teaching. You will have excellent communication and collaboration skills and be able to work effectively across disciplinary areas and engage students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

You must hold a PhD by the time of appointment in European literatures, comparative literature, film or media studies, languages, cultural studies, Gender Studies or a related field, with:

• Competency in at least two Romance European languages and cultures represented in our curriculum, preferably French and Spanish.
• A record of effective tertiary teaching, research and publication in relevant fields.
• The ability to teach in Gender Studies, with experience in, or readiness to undertake, postgraduate supervision and advising.
• Expertise in European diasporas, colonialisms and postcolonialisms, with experience adapting and innovating curricula and courses in response to evolving needs, would be desirable.
