We have an opportunity for a Technician to join the Te Kura Mātai Hinengaro | The School of Psychology, providing specialist support to the Experimental Analysis of Behaviour Research Unit (EABRU). This role is hands-on and will support animal care, welfare, and behavioural research activities, with a particular focus on avian species. You will work closely with academic staff, students, and technical colleagues to ensure

Ngā Haepapa Matua | Key Responsibilities (not limited too):

  • Provide high-quality animal husbandry, health monitoring, and welfare support
  • Support the implementation of enrichment programmes and evidence-based welfare practices
  • Assist researchers and students with animal handling, care, and research activities
  • Maintain accurate records and support animal ethics and compliance requirements
  • Ensure laboratory and facility spaces are safe, well-maintained, and fit for purpose
  • Contribute to training and induction of facility users
  • Support procurement, inventory management, and general operational requirements

This is a part-time (30 hrs per week) permanent role, across Monday to Friday 

The remuneration range is $63,600 - $79,300 (pro-rated) per annum, dependent on skills and experience

He kōrero mōu | About you

We are seeking a collaborative and detail-oriented individual with a strong commitment to animal welfare and safe laboratory practices.

You will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in animal husbandry, animal welfare, veterinary nursing, or a related field
  • Experience in animal handling and husbandry (experience with birds is advantageous)
  • Knowledge of animal health, welfare, and ethical practice
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Confidence working with systems, record-keeping, and compliance processes

Previous experience in a research or laboratory environment will be beneficial, but is not essential
