Job Description
Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
This role provides specialist development support for any research that requires bespoke software or hardware systems. Work is project based to achieve goals set around software or hardware deliverables, contributions to publications or commercialisation opportunities that benefit academic staff, students and stakeholders from the broader research community. The role also provides general support to research and education within the School by improving the efficiency of internal processes and procedures through development of specialist software systems.
Minimum Qualification:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field such as Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, Mathematics or Philosophy (Logic and Computation).
Work experience:
- At least three years’ work experience developing software that supports academic research and teaching.
- Has developed software applications for both desktop (Windows & Linux) and mobile (Android & iOS).
- Worked on ‘mixed reality’ projects, where one virtual environment is shared and interacted by multiple persons using different virtual/augmented reality headsets or mobile devices such as smartphones.
- Has developed on-line systems for image analysis and identification
- Has worked on on-line systems for programming language analysis
- Experience setting up environments for Machine Learning
- Has developed Human Machine Interface research monitor tools for both desktop and mobile environments.
Skills:
- Ability to implement state-of-the art research outputs into software from the Computer Vision, Computer Graphics and Human Machine Interfaces fields.
- Able to program in C, C++, Prolog, Java, Javascript, Matlab, PhP and Python.
- Multi-platform software development for Linux, Windows, Android and iOS.
- Used research tools, libraries and API’s such as OpenCV, ARCore, Unity, CUDA, Tensorflow.
- Network programming; TCP/IP Protocols
- Setting up and calibrating Virtual Reality Headset’s and configuring NVidia GPU hardware.
Job specifics:
This Technical Services position will be based at the School of Computer Science. The School is located on the central University campus in downtown Auckland.
This is a permanent, full time position (37.5 hours/week). The pay rate for this position is between $64,600 and $74,500 negotiable on experience and qualifications.

This position primarily supports the School of Computer Science which is New Zealand’s leading computer science department with over 40 academic staff including 8 full professors. It performs research in a wide range of computing fields including data science; software engineering; cyber security; theory; communication and information technology; and systems development and evaluation. It teaches into undergraduate programmes in Science and Engineering as well as supporting a vibrant postgraduate programme which attracts quality Masters and PhD candidates. Currently the School boasts over 600 undergraduate students and 115 postgraduate students.

Our ideal candidate will have several years’ software development experience. You have a proven track record of applications (desktop, mobile & on-line) that have contributed to achieving academic research and education goals. You will also have extensive experience with state-of-the art research hardware such as virtual reality headsets.
