Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We are seeking a Professional Teaching Fellow to deliver high quality teaching in Applied Mathematics at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to perform teaching-related administration duties.

This is a fixed-term 12 Month contract for a full-time employee.

The expected teaching load will be two half courses in semester 1 and two half courses in semester 2. The position will not involve summer school teaching. The precise courses to be taught are at the discretion of the Head of Department but are likely to include some of MATHS 260, 270, 362, 363, 762, 763, 787. You will demonstrate teaching that is research informed and consistent with the standards of the programme and you will support teaching activities including:

  • Preparing and delivering lectures, tutorials and seminars
  • Preparing teaching and assessment materials and associated marking
  • Assisting with course coordination and the preparation of resources in a timely manner
  • Providing academic oversight and pastoral care to the student cohort
  • Being available for student consultation
  • Providing the Head of Department with feedback regarding students’ progress.

Te Kura Mātauranga Pāngarau | The Department of Mathematics, is the largest and strongest Mathematics Department in New Zealand and offers a full range of courses. With expertise and courses spanning pure mathematics, applied mathematics and mathematics education, the department also runs a suite of large service courses addressing the needs of more than 2,000 students per year from other faculties and departments.

He kōrero mōu | About you

Given the nature of this role it is essential for you to have Post Graduate Degree in Applied Mathematics. We would also prefer you to have a PhD in Applied Mathematics. 

It is essential that you have teaching experience at undergraduate level mathematics, and it will be beneficial if you have experience with large class teaching, course coordination and assessment design, as well as post-graduate teaching.
