About This Job:

The Data Engineer supports the design and maintenance of data pipelines and infrastructure that enable accurate, timely, and reliable data for analytics and decision-making within the Vegetable R&D IT organization. This role focuses on building and optimizing data workflows that integrate diverse datasets such as breeding, trial, genomic, and phenotypic data. You will help transform raw research data into structured, accessible formats for scientists, analysts, and business teams, ensuring compliance with data governance and security standards. Collaboration is key—you’ll work closely with breeders, data scientists, and IT teams to understand requirements and deliver solutions that accelerate innovation in vegetable seed development. This position emphasizes continuous learning, adaptability, and operational discipline, providing a strong foundation for growth into advanced data engineering roles.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Data Pipeline Development: Assist in building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines for R&D datasets; support automation and troubleshooting.
  • Data Infrastructure Support: Help maintain cloud or on-prem data platforms; assist with database optimization and storage solutions for breeding and trial data.
  • Data Quality & Governance: Implement validation checks for research datasets; document schemas and lineage; follow security and compliance standards.
  • Collaboration & Support: Work with breeders, data scientists, and IT stakeholders to clarify requirements; participate in code reviews and knowledge sharing.
  • Continuous Learning: Explore new tools and technologies relevant to agricultural data; apply feedback to improve reliability and maintainability.

Qualifications

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities

  • Technical Foundations: Basic understanding of SQL/NoSQL databases, data warehousing, and pipeline orchestration concepts.
  • Programming & Tools: Python and SQL proficiency; exposure to ETL tools (Airflow, dbt) and frameworks (Spark, Pandas); Git basics.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure: Familiarity with cloud data services (AWS, Azure, GCP); awareness of containerization (Docker) and CI/CD principles.
  • Domain Awareness: Understanding of agricultural or biological data concepts (breeding, trials, phenotyping) is a plus.
  • Soft Skills: Problem-solving, attention to detail, clear communication, teamwork, and eagerness to learn.
  • Experience: Bachelor’s degree; 2-3 years experience; preferred certifications in cloud fundamentals and exposure to Agile/Scrum.
