Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Model Governance Manager to join our dynamic Machine Learning team at Cash App. As the Model Governance Manager, you will be charged with overseeing the development, implementation, and maintenance of robust model governance frameworks and policies. You will partner with machine learning modelers and engineers to establish governance requirements, build process guidelines, conduct model risk analyses, and co-design automation and tooling to ultimately improve business performance and decision making. Your impact will be instrumental in ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, internal guidelines, and best practices while managing model risk and AI fairness.

 

You Will

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive model and data governance framework that aligns with regulatory guidelines, industry standards, information security best practices, and Cash App's strategic objectives.
  • Establish and enforce policies and procedures for data governance as well as model development, validation, implementation, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including machine learning engineers, product managers, compliance officers, and senior management, to ensure effective model governance practices throughout the organization.
  • Conduct thorough assessments of model risk, including identifying, measuring, and mitigating potential risks and biases associated with models.
  • Lead the validation and approval process for new models or changes to existing models, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with internal and external requirements.
  • Monitor the performance and effectiveness of models, conducting periodic reviews and audits to assess model accuracy, stability, and ongoing suitability.
  • Design processes, automation, and software tooling to minimize operational risk and maximize efficacy of model governance framework.
  • Stay abreast of emerging industry trends, regulatory changes, and advancements in model risk management to enhance Cash App's model governance practices.
  • Collaborate with internal audit and regulatory compliance teams to facilitate model-related audits, examinations, and reporting requirements.
  • Provide guidance and training to stakeholders, including model developers and business teams, on model governance best practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Support regulatory reporting requirements related to model governance and risk management.

Qualifications

You Have

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field such as Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or related disciplines. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in model governance, model risk management, or related roles within the financial services industry, preferably in consumer lending or fintech.
  • In-depth knowledge of regulatory guidelines and best practices pertaining to model risk management, such as SR 11-7/OCC 2011-12, or similar frameworks.
  • Advanced understanding of data governance and regulatory requirements, such as GDPR, CCPA, Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) guidelines, or other similar frameworks to ensure adherence to data management best practices and compliance.
  • Strong understanding of model development, validation, and implementation processes, including statistical modeling techniques, data governance, and model documentation standards.
  • Strong understanding of AI fairness concepts, including disparate impact analysis, bias mitigation techniques, and fairness metrics.
  • Proven track record of driving complex technical projects, especially in the context of a software development organization.
  • Familiarity with consumer lending products, credit risk assessment models, and relevant regulatory requirements (e.g., Fair Lending, Truth in Lending Act, etc.).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and influence stakeholders at various levels.
  • Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python, R) and data manipulation tools (e.g., SQL) preferred.

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $184,100 - USD $225,000
Zone B: USD $174,900 - USD $213,700
Zone C: USD $165,700 - USD $202,500
Zone D: USD $156,400 - USD $191,200

This role is also eligible to participate in Block's equity plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies, and may be eligible for a sign-on bonus.
