Software Engineering Manager, Square for Retail
- Full-time
Company Description
Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.
To solve this problem, we expanded into software and built integrated solutions to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
Job Description
From the cozy local wine store to the trendy sneaker pop-up, the Retail team at Square is finding new ways to equip retail sellers and their staff with the tools they need to succeed. Our team focuses on helping smaller retailers meet their customers wherever they are: be that in-store, online, or on social/messaging platforms. We’re addressing the desire for clean and minimalist store counters with intuitive yet sophisticated iOS, Android, and Web-based software that integrates seamlessly with our sleek hardware, all backed by highly reliable services.
As an Engineering Manager for the Retail Grocery team, you’d lead a new full-stack distributed team of five engineers responsible for accelerating Retail’s ability to win in the grocery sub-vertical. Square for Retail started 6 years ago, with the premise that Square would be more successful with more complex Retail stores if we had a specific Point-of-Sale offering for Retail, with support for complex Inventory Management, Ordering and Checkout workflows. We’re starting a new team focused on Grocery to support the more specific needs of these types of retailers, building software and hardware support for faster and more complex checkout and inventory management for businesses with large catalogs and perishable goods. This is a brand new team with 3 engineers (2 Android, 1 iOS) joining to seed the team from within Retail, one senior engineer joining in January, and one open role. This is an exciting opportunity for Retail and we expect that in the future this team will continue to grow.
All of our teams have Android, iOS, Frontend, and Server engineers allowing us to design, build and ship features across our Point of Sale clients on iOS and Android, our seller facing tools on the web, and our backend platforms. You'll work cross functionally with Product, Design and Data Science teams to build features that present elegant UI for complex problems, saving sellers time and reducing anxiety as they strive to succeed in today’s pandemic-accelerated shift to omni-channel selling.
You Will:
Lead your team in creating beautiful, unique products which allow retail sellers to manage increasingly complex business operations while also expanding our product internationally into new markets.
Oversee the success of your team's product commitments across multiple platforms.
Build systems, services, and product features across multiple platforms that have immediate impact for retailers globally.
Use your technical expertise to coach and guide your team, and to maintain a high bar.
Work collaboratively with experienced designers, product managers, and engineers; both on our team and with our friends on other teams.
Report into an Engineering Lead and engage in product discussions with leaders across the company.
