Data Scientist, Developer Empowerment

  • Full-time

Company Description

Since we first opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely – and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take a payment and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, run a busy kitchen, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. And across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow all in one place.

Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.

There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a business that is big, meaningful, and lasting. And we are helping sellers around the world do the same.

Job Description

The Developer Empowerment team at Square enables developers to be productive and effective by building foundational components, frameworks and tools that aid all stages of the software development life cycle. Data scientists on the team play a critical role in defining and implementing metrics that capture various aspects of SW development. They help our teams understand user needs and product gaps through better data and guide them in decision making and prioritization.

You Will:

  • Design and implement metrics, dashboards, reports, and deep-dive analyses to measure how well we are meeting the needs of developers and our partner teams and inform where we should invest to improve software development at Square

  • Apply a diverse set of tactics such as statistics, quantitative reasoning, and machine learning to research and produce insights

  • Lead and coordinate on complex projects that extend beyond the traditional boundaries of product domains, analytics, and data science

  • Communicate analysis and decisions to high-level partners and executives in verbal, visual, and written media

  • Develop resources to empower data access and self-service so your expertise can be used where it is most impactful

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of analytics experience, or equivalent

  • Fluency with data, analytics, and visualization technologies (We primarily use SQL, Looker, and Python)

  • Familiarity with fundamental software engineering tools such as version control software (we use Git) and build systems

  • Experience with using, and ideally building, ETL pipelines to process large amounts of data

  • Demonstrated ability to independently prioritize and lead analytics projects in collaboration with multiple product and engineering managers as an analytics partner

  • Ability to clearly communicate complex results to technical and non-technical audiences in verbal, visual, and written media
