Global Head of Creative, Square

  • Full-time
  • Alternate Location: San Francisco, United States

Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then, Square has been building an entire business toolkit of hardware and software products, including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

Square is looking for a visionary Head of Creative to lead our global, full-service, internal marketing creative team. As the Head of Creative, you will be responsible for driving and continuously elevating the overall creative expression and identity for the Square brand. You will lead a large and growing organization of 90+ internal team members across various multidisciplinary functions, including copy, art direction, design, production, and operations.

This role oversees all of the creative development for the Global Marketing organization, which spans eight countries (and growing), in support of a several hundred million dollar marketing budget.  Creative assets run the gamut from performance, awareness, and content marketing across a wide variety of channels and formats. In addition to the creative execution, you will be responsible for defining the team's operating model, including maintaining creative centers of excellence, setting and enforcing brand guidelines, oversight of tools and platforms, overall budget management, and training for teams across a highly matrixed organization.

Reporting into the CMO, you will work directly with senior leadership on team structuring and planning that impact workflows across the company, making staffing recommendations for a growing organization with a rotating cast of freelancers. You will directly manage a group of senior leaders across various creative disciplines. You will be a vocal leader, advocating for your vision for the team and helping the organization see the power of creative work as a business driver.

You will:

  • Partner directly with marketing and creative leaders throughout the organization to inspire cohesive creative work across all products and channels

  • Focus on the scalability of our creative capabilities, maximizing our output through a combination of internal and external creative resources

  • Lead development and documentation of team strategy during regular planning cycles, making the business case for all aspects of creative team activities

  • Evangelize creative work and team priorities to a variety of audiences, i.e., team all hands, executive presentations, and company-wide meetings

  • Encourage optimization of creative work based on real-time in-market results

  • Maintain a healthy and productive leadership team through coaching, mentorship, and effective performance management practices

  • Cultivate an inclusive, collaborative, and equitable team culture that promotes ideation, innovation, and risk-taking

  • Be a member of the cross-company creative leadership team and help set the tone for the creative culture at Square

Qualifications

You have played a leadership role in building and leading large multidisciplinary creative teams at an agency or within an internal client-side creative group. Your teams have delivered business-building creative work— and you are equally skilled at providing organizational leadership and creative feedback. You are comfortable in complex cross-functional organizations, are experienced with data-driven marketing tactics, and thrive in a highly collaborative environment.

  • 15+ years experience in a creative role, including six or more years leading a creative team

  • Proven experience with product-focused storytelling across a wide variety of marketing formats

  • Exceptional business writing skills

  • Comfort overseeing complex budget management activities across a variety of programs

  • Working knowledge of current production and asset creation workflows

  • Deep understanding of current full-funnel marketing strategies

  • Proven ability to recruit, motivate and manage a team of talented marketing creatives

  • Ability to manage highly complex initiatives through effective delegation

  • Ability to facilitate the entire creative process, including providing clear direction and producing work cost-effectively and on schedule
