The Ecosystem Discovery Engineering team is responsible for building tools that help accelerate Square’s mission. We build platform tools that have outsized benefits and enable other teams at Square to iterate faster. This team is the face of Square’s marketing and helps host the public facing web site.  This team partners closely with product managers, designers and marketing managers, so that we can meet our customer needs — today and tomorrow.

As a Design Technologist, you’ll partner with design and frontend engineers to create digital experiences that will set the UI/UX directions for the reusable components on our platform. You will be responsible for bringing technology to the creative process, the front-end interactions you bring to life will create remarkable experiences for our existing and prospective sellers.

You are well versed in an appropriate mix of development and prototyping platforms and tools, and know how to select the best and most appropriate platform for the task. You deliver code that is flexible and can be iterated upon and pride yourself on being up to date with the latest proven standards and best practices. Thriving on exploration and experimentation, you are at the heart of co-creating ideas and bringing them to life. You have well rounded skill sets that complement your application of technology including but never limited to: a precise eye for intelligent UX, great design and good foundations in strategy, business acumen and process. 

Responsibilities

As a Design Technologist on the team, you will:

• Actively participate in concept development and design iteration

• Work independently on projects from ideation and design through implementation

• Take creative direction and expand on concept ideas for tactics, with solid and active contribution in creative reviews

• Actively take part in brainstorms, partnering with colleagues across disciplines including Strategy, Design, Digital Production and Copy

• Execute hands-on technical development of prototypes coming out of ideation

• Contribute to discussions about the digital aspects of creative campaigns

• Comfortably present ideas or prototypes to mixed client products / design / engineering

• Work creatively through and around perceived limitations and/or challenges imposed by the platform to create delightful experiences for customers

• Evaluate and document any new creative and/or engineering standards or patterns that could arise from your work

• Execute web experiments for A/B testing using Optimizely.

• Maintain and contribute new components to the design system

• BS in Computer Science or a related technical field, or 4 years of relevant work experience

• Front-end development – HTML, CSS, Javascript, and modern tooling

• Backend development – Familiarity of Ruby, or other backend languages

• Portfolio of work that displays design, high-fidelity animation, motion, iconography, typography, color, and imagery

• Understanding of web standards, browser performance and best practices

• Passion for digital marketing, advertising, and understanding metrics

• Excellent communication skills and a desire to collaborate

• Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment

• Ability to advocate for technology and choosing the right tool for the job

• Familiarity of modern design tools (Figma, Adobe After Effects, Cinema 4D etc)
