Software Engineer, Items Server Foundation

  • Full-time

Company Description

Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Job Description

As a software engineer on the Catalog Items Foundation team, you will join a new team that is responsible for scaling the backend infrastructure for our core Items services, which serve as the backbone for multiple teams including Items, Taxes, Discounts, Subscriptions and more.  This is a new team being created to meet the demand of our growing sellers and the scale of their Item Catalogs to levels that simply aren’t possible today. You will utilize modern cloud-based database technologies to improve performance and scale to handle the future needs of our merchants and Square.

You will:

  • Build a highly scalable, reliable, and performant platform that can scale to handle the needs of our merchants

  • Lead architectural and design discussions, ensuring our platform is performant, fault tolerant, and maintainable

  • Provide input to aid in the technical decisions and direction for the team and mentor other engineers

  • Design fault tolerant systems so the team can be brave, move fast, and break things, without ever showing a negative impact to customers.

  • Be given opportunities to stretch yourself by learning new technologies and working with engineers and other partners

Qualifications

You have:

  • Experience building and maintaining highly scalable and performant systems

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent practical, working experience (4+ years)

  • Technical initiative and a desire to make those around you better

  • Eagerness to share your own ideas, and openness to those of others.

  • A knack for creating readable, well-crafted, maintainable code.

Technologies we use:
