Job Description
Smiths Detection Malaysia, a leading manufacturer of complex machines, seeks an experienced Planning Manager to oversee and optimize material and production planning. With a Global Supplier Network of over 200 raw material vendors, this role is critical to ensuring efficient operations and meeting customer demands.
The Planning Manager will lead a team of six professionals, including three Material Planners and three Production Planners, to plan, execute, and deliver a customer-focused 3 month Master Production Schedule.

This is a key leadership role requiring strong planning expertise, operational excellence, team management skills, and a commitment to delivering excellent customer experience.
SPECIFIC DUTIES, ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Master Production Scheduling: Develop, maintain, and execute the master production schedule to align with customer orders, inventory targets, and capacity constraints.
- Clear to Build: Ensure production orders are clear to build with all necessary components available.
- Customer Delivery: Ensure production plan will deliver high levels of customer satisfaction and On Time Delivery in Full. Work closely with Shipping and Logistics functions to ensure execution and delivery of plan.
- Supplier Management: establish strong relationships with key suppliers to ensure consistent on time delivery, working closely with procurement teams to manage supplier lead times and contract quantities.
- Inventory Management: Optimise inventory levels to balance production needs and cost efficiency. Conduct regular inventory analysis and monthly reviews on slow and non-moving inventory.
- Capacity Management: Analyze production capacities utilizing SAP Capacity Planning Modules and identify constraints, proactively proposing solutions to address bottlenecks and improve throughput.
- Risk Management: Assess and mitigate risks related to production scheduling, including supplier delays, equipment downtime, and changes in customer demand.
- Team Leadership: Lead, mentor and develop a team of planners to achieve departmental and organizational goals. Foster culture or continuous improvement, collaboration and accountability within the team.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify and lead initiatives to improve scheduling processes, reduce lead times, enhance production efficiency, and improve overall supply chain performance.
- Talent Development: Nurture talent within the supply chain organization and ensure individual development plans and succession plans are in place.
- Compliance: Comply with all applicable logistic trade compliance, LMW, Health and Safety, and security regulations.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or related field. Professional certification (APICS, PMAC, CIPS, etc.) an advantage
Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
- A minimum of 7 years’ experience in supply chain planning with exposure to both master production scheduling and material planning, preferably within a complex manufacturing environment.
- Experience in leading high performing supply chain teams with evidence of delivering measurable performance improvement.
- Proven ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams, manage conflict, and foster collaboration in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience necessary to make good judgment in an increasingly complex business by sourcing and analyzing information from within the business and from industry.
- Track record of delivering process improvement projects and defining Standard Operating Procedures
- Proficiency in ERP/MRP systems (SAP an advantage), able to manipulate master data configurations to achieve desired system outcome.
- Strong Excel and data visualization skills with the ability to manage large datasets and make data-driven decisions.
- Experience in managing vendor performance and ensuring delivery to required service levels.
- The ability to persistently pursue and achieve results; actively create plans in order to hit or exceed targets.
- Able to clearly articulate goals for people to follow and effectively lead and manage the performance.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple deadlines.
