Job Description
The Application Engineer is a primary technical resource for the sales team and is responsible for actively driving and managing the technology evaluation and technical solution stage of the sales process. They are relied upon to collaborate with key Syntegon associates and be an expert at applying packaging machinery solutions. They must be able to create cost estimates based on their project. They are also expected to build strong relationships with other OEM’s (internal and external to Syntegon) to be an expert at combining OEM machinery into our customer solutions. Applications engineers are expected effectively communicate the critical technical details that enable our operations team to deliver projects accurately, on time, and within budget.
Qualifications
- PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain expert level of machinery, auxiliary equipment, and application specific technical details.
- Support the sales team with technical expertise and discuss with customers directly.
- Articulate technology and product characteristics to associates and customers in supporting the RFQ process.
- Provide design specifications to consultants, integrators, and distributors.
- Lead technical review of RfQ and provide feedback and approvals for necessary customer specifications.
- Create cost estimations of the proposed solution in engineering, manufacturing, assembly, materials (including internally and externally sourced items), , validation, FAT, and any other elements that may be specific to customer requirements to complete the packaging line build.
- Ensure all customer requirements are documented and reviewed to complete the process for quoting.
- Visit customers to evaluate existing machinery, develop customer solutions, and support sales.
- Create line layouts and preliminary machine sales drawings in AutoCAD to submit with the proposal.
- Utilize and maintain cost compiler to create costing sheets for new projects, analyze cost changes, and seek cost improvements.
- Support project managers to kick off projects for handover and any changes that may occur that effect the concept and costs of an ordered project.
- Resolve customer issues or difficulties in a manner that is consistent with the company mission, values, and financial objectives.
- Maintain accurate records of target accounts, opportunities, quotes, projects, contacts, and correspondence in company approved databases.
- Maintain professional business relationships within target accounts.
- Identify customer's needs and sales opportunities to help future growth.
- Travel to trade shows to assist sales.
- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop creative solutions to customer problems that meet or exceed their expectations and create profit.
- Develop a clear understanding of the capabilities and limitations of our products and our operations team.
- Collaborate and encourage associates to meet the challenging needs of sales to support their customers with proposals.
- Effectively estimate the cost of custom machinery solutions or complete packaging systems.
- Develop preliminary sales layout drawings to support customer needs using AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
- Evaluate customer specifications for compatibility with our products.
- Organize and lead high level go / no-go review meetings of non-standard RFQ’s.
- Organize and lead brainstorming meetings with engineering to develop challenging solutions.
- Maintain cost compiler that contains latest and greatest pricing for machinery and auxiliary equipment.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 5+ years of industry experience in the technical feasibility and cost supporting part of the business
- Experienced in AUTOCAD, Solidworks, or related experience
- Experience in MS Products (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Teams, etc.)
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams.

Additional Information
The expected compensation range for this position is between $85,000 – 120,000 based on a full-time schedule.
Compensation for roles at Syntegon varies depending on a wide array of non-discriminatory factors including but not limited to the specific office location, role, degree/credentials, relevant skill set, and level of relevant experience. At Syntegon compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Total rewards at Syntegon include salary + bonus (if applicable) + benefits.
