Job Description

To report on, inspections on Mineral commodities, in accordance with instructions received from Site Supervisor.

  1. Train staff on site with regards to sampling and inspection
  2. Administer risk assessments, permits to work, PPE hazard assessments, mini-risk assessments and check-statuses before inspections are done
  3. Monitor field staff in terms of the efficiency of activities carried out.
  4. Check timesheets for Blu staff based on supervision of staff
  5. Compile field reports, photographs and detailed summaries for all inspections and upload to SharePoint.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain quality, efficiency and confidentiality of service
  • Liaise with site supervisor and arrange efficient allocation of staff that limits overtime and promotes safety
  • Continuously upgrade the quality of services offered
  • Establish, direct and review the system of application, recording, certification, filing, sample storage and field auditing
  • Communicate with sample prep and other branches/divisions and laboratory to achieve the required turnaround time for all submitted samples
  • Assign duties [and assist when necessary] in the coordination of shipments and other fieldwork.
  • Provide daily updates to commodity coordinator.
  • Assist in the efficient administrative running of the office as instructed by site supervisor
  • Implementation of cost control measures mainly with respect to proper allocation of staff and PPE usage on the field.
  • Liaise with warehouse and port personnel and arrange inspections
  • To ensure compliance with all the requirements of the inspection order (mission order and risk assessment)
  • Keep direct superior informed regarding progress and/or non-conformance. Implement needed corrective action.
  • Assist in continuously upgrading the quality of services offered, in support of the "Customer Services" policy and minimize client complaints and claims
  • General office duties.
  • Proper implementation of SIR promptly and other SGS platforms needed for inspections
  • Attend to inspection operation of Mineral cargoes following International Standards and Company Q.A policies and mandate given by the principal
  • To carry out and/or supervise all weighing operations if required by the mandate
  • To carry out and/or supervise all sampling and sample preparation operations if required by the mandate including submittal of sample with sample submission form.
  • To ensure compliance with all the requirements of the inspection order.
  • Keep direct superior informed regarding progress and/or non-conformance.
  • Perform any other reasonable tasks assigned by direct line manager/site supervisor.
  • To ensure the planning of tests, sampling and evaluation of results.
  • To assign [and assist] and/or supervise the performance of tests and sampling.
  • Train staff on site to achieve quality in sampling activities

Quality, Health, Safety & Environmental Responsibilities

  • Comply with all SGS Quality and safety management system and PPE requirements.
  • Identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, and incidents immediately.
  • Handle commodities and equipment safely according to MSDS and SOPs/Work Instructions/Mission order/ISO Standards etc.
  • Participate in safety training, toolbox talks and safety initiatives.
  • Conduct safety training and toolbox talks with field operators.
  • Ensure proper waste disposal according to environmental regulations
  • Stop work if unsafe conditions are identified.
  • Always maintain a 5-S-compliant level of housekeeping at your workstation.
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections before use.
  • Adhere to road safety regulations and SGS Transportation procedures.
  • Report accidents, near misses, and vehicle defects immediately
  • Ensure safe loading and securing of samples.
  • Follow company Travel management and transportation procedures.
  • Participate in emergency drills.
  • Report deviations and communicate instructions to improve and maintain the quality system.

Specific Authorities 

  • Coordinate and report on inspections timely
  • Communicate with the client with accurate & honest findings from inspection
  • Guide and assist junior staff and samplers on site
  • Only authorized staff have the authority to express opinions and interpretations related to results.

  • 100% usage of SIR
  • Timely reporting of inspections
  • Little to no customer complaints
  • Execution of inspections in line with MO & RAM
  • Monitoring of staff time on site

COMPLIANCE & AUTHORITY 

  • Compliant with all SGS HSEQ and HR policies and procedures
  • Granted sufficient authority to achieve the given responsibilities as per relevant SGS Authority policies
  • Responsible for the daily safety and health of employees on behalf of SGS upper management and for raising issues with SGS upper management where required
  • Keep up to date on SGS inspection policies and procedures. Apply the necessary policy to all inspections to avoid misunderstandings during inspections
  • Adhere to all QHSE requirements of the SGS management systems.

 

     

      Qualifications

      QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

      • Matric [minimum], preferably with Maths and Science.
      • Post-matric qualification in sampling and inspection services
      • Languages: Proficiency in English (Read, Speak, Write)
      • Any other languages an added advantage
      • Typing Skills
      • Computer literacy in Word and Excel
      • Calculation capability — to ensure accurate scoring of client’s results
      • Technical Report writing ability
      • Tallying and data capturing
      • More than 5years experience
