Job Description
The Lab Technician / Machinist position is responsible for performing precision machining operations and conducting destructive testing on material and weld samples in support of fabrication, welding qualification, and perform hydrotesting. This role includes preparing test specimens and executing destructive tests to evaluate material properties and weld integrity. The technician ensures all machining and testing activities are carried out accurately and in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and internal procedures.
Machine Shop Operations
- Operate shop equipment including band saws, mills, grinders, and polishing equipment
- Cut, machine, and prepare test specimens to required dimensions and tolerances
- Perform surface preparation including grinding and polishing for testing and examination
- Lead and interpret test requirements and machining instructions •Maintain equipment and tooling in safe working condition
- Ensure proper material identification and traceability throughout processing
- Destructive Testing & Hydrotesting
- Conduct destructive testing in accordance with applicable standards (e.g., CSA, ASME, ASTM), including: o Tensile testing o Bend testing o Impact (Charpy) testing o Hardness testing (e.g., Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers), etc.
- Prepare and verify test setups and equipment calibration prior to testing
- Perform hydrostatic testing of components and assemblies according to procedures and specifications
- Set up and verify testing equipment prior to use, including calibration checks where required
- Record and report test results accurately
Laboratory & Quality Support
- Perform chemical analysis using available lab equipment (e.g., spectrometer)
- Assist with weld procedure qualification testing (WPS/PQR support)
- Maintain testing records, logs, and documentation in accordance with quality system requirements
- Ensure compliance with company quality manual and applicable codes/standards
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 2+ years in a machine shop, fabrication environment preferred
- 2+ years experience in a materials testing lab preferred
- Experience performing hydrotesting
Additional Information
Salary: $30-32 an hour + benefits.
