Role Purpose

The Business Development Manager will drive market development and commercial growth for SGS Malaysia’s Building & Infrastructure services, with focus on data centre construction, commissioning witness and verification, commissioning agent and quality assurance opportunities. The role is responsible for assessing market opportunities, developing new service offerings, building customer and ecosystem relationships, pursuing qualified project pipelines and converting opportunities into sustainable business growth.

Business Context

  • This role supports SGS Malaysia’s new services in data centre infrastructure building, where customers require third-party commissioning witness and verification, commissioning agent and quality assurance support.
  • The position is expected to strengthen SGS Malaysia’s commercial presence within the data centre, building infrastructure, factory and construction ecosystem, including developers, contractors, consultants and end users.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and execute business development strategy for data centre construction, building and infrastructure services in Malaysia.

• Assess market opportunities, customer needs, technical feasibility and commercial potential for new data centre commissioning, QA/QC, inspection and advisory service offerings.

• Build and manage a qualified pipeline across data centre owners, hyperscalers, colocation providers, developers, EPCs, contractors, consultants and facility management companies.

• Identify, qualify and convert new project opportunities through customer meetings, market intelligence, networking, proposals, tender support and commercial follow-up.

• Work with technical teams to translate customer needs into practical SGS service scopes, value propositions, proposals and go-to-market offerings.

• Develop and maintain strong relationships with key accounts and ecosystem stakeholders, including potential customers such as Gamuda, Sunway, YTL and other major industry players.

• Track market trends, competitor activity, project investments, customer requirements and emerging data centre opportunities to support business growth decisions.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct market mapping and opportunity assessment for data centre construction, factory projects, building infrastructure and mission-critical facilities.

• Identify and approach potential clients, consultants, contractors, developers, owners, operators and strategic partners to promote SGS Building & Infrastructure services.

• Develop customer account plans, visit plans, opportunity pipelines, sales forecasts and action plans to achieve agreed revenue and growth targets.

• Prepare and coordinate proposals, commercial offers, tender responses, presentation materials, credentials and service value propositions in collaboration with technical teams.

• Lead commercial discussions, clarify customer requirements, support negotiation and follow up on proposals until project conversion or closure.

• Support the design and development of new service offerings related to commissioning witness and verification, commissioning agent services, QA/QC review and third-party inspection / assurance.

• Develop strategic partnerships and referral relationships with ecosystem players such as data centre operators, EPC contractors, MEP contractors, consultants and facility management companies.

• Maintain accurate CRM records, opportunity status, customer information, sales activities, win/loss analysis and management reports.

• Collaborate with operations and technical teams to support smooth project handover from sales to delivery and ensure customer commitments are clearly documented.

• Represent SGS professionally at customer meetings, industry events, networking sessions, seminars and marketing activities where required.

• Ensure all business development activities comply with SGS Code of Integrity, commercial policies, confidentiality requirements and professional conduct expectations.

• Adherence to SGS Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy by upholding good safety behaviour and exercising necessary standards and processes when carrying out responsibilities at all times to ensure compliance with the HSE requirements.

• Perform any other responsibilities as assigned by your reporting manager and/or Senior Management.

Qualifications

Qualification

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Building Services, Construction Management, Business, Marketing or other related studies.

• More than 5–10 years of experience in business development, sales, key account management or market development within Building & Infrastructure, construction, MEP, technical services, TIC, consultancy or related sectors.

• Minimum 2 years of exposure to data centre construction, mission-critical facilities, factory / industrial projects or related project ecosystem is preferred.

Relevant Experience

• Proven track record in developing new customers, building project pipelines, preparing proposals, managing stakeholders and converting opportunities into revenue.

• Experience engaging with developers, contractors, EPCs, consultants, facility managers, data centre operators, factory owners or infrastructure customers will be an added advantage.

• Good understanding of data centre construction lifecycle, commissioning, QA/QC, MEP systems, project delivery and customer procurement processes is preferred.

• Able and willing to travel up to 75% of the time for customer meetings, site visits, industry networking and project opportunity development.
