Job Description
Role Purpose
The Machinery Safety Engineer will support SGS Malaysia’s new System & Process Safety service by conducting machinery safety assessments and preparing / signing-off safety assessment reports for customers in the manufacturing sector. The role is responsible for evaluating the safe use of machinery, identifying hazards, assessing risk, recommending risk reduction measures and supporting compliance with DOSH requirements and relevant machinery safety standards.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conduct machinery safety assessments, machine risk assessments and safety reviews for manufacturing and industrial customers.
• Prepare, review and sign-off machinery safety assessment reports in accordance with SGS requirements, applicable standards and customer scope.
• Evaluate machinery hazards across the lifecycle of equipment, including installation, operation, maintenance, cleaning, troubleshooting and modification activities.
• Assess risk reduction measures such as safeguarding, interlocking, emergency stop systems, safety-related control systems, safe operating procedures and residual risk communication.
• Provide technical advice on DOSH requirements, ISO 12100:2010, ISO 13849 and related machinery safety standards or good practices.
• Support project delivery by planning site assessments, collecting technical information, reviewing documents, conducting inspections and coordinating close-out actions.
• Support business growth by providing technical input to proposals, customer discussions, service development and internal capability building.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conduct on-site machinery safety assessments, hazard identification, risk estimation, risk evaluation and risk reduction reviews based on ISO 12100 principles.
• Review machine design, layout, guarding, access points, safety distances, emergency stop functions, lockout / tagout provisions, warning systems and user instructions.
• Assess safety-related parts of control systems and support verification against ISO 13849 requirements, including Performance Level considerations where applicable.
• Review customer documents such as machine manuals, drawings, electrical / control schematics, risk assessments, maintenance procedures, inspection records and previous incident data.
• Prepare clear and professional reports including observations, risk ratings, findings, recommendations, corrective actions and sign-off conclusions.
• Provide practical recommendations to reduce machinery-related risks through engineering controls, safeguarding improvements, procedural controls and training needs.
• Conduct technical discussions, closing meetings and presentations with customers to explain assessment findings and recommended actions.
• Maintain good documentation control, impartiality, confidentiality and technical integrity in all inspection and assessment activities.
• Support development of SGS machinery safety methodologies, templates, checklists, procedures, training materials and competency framework.
• Keep updated on machinery safety regulations, DOSH requirements, ISO standards, manufacturing safety practices and market developments relevant to SGS services.
• Adherence to SGS Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy by upholding good safety behaviour and exercising necessary standards and processes when carrying out responsibilities at all times to ensure compliance with the HSE requirements.
• Perform any other responsibilities as assigned by your reporting manager and/or Senior Management.
Qualifications
Qualification
• Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, Occupational Safety & Health or a related technical discipline.
• Registered Machinery Safety Competent Person under DOSH is required for report sign-off scope, or must be eligible and committed to obtain / maintain the required registration.
• Familiarity with ISO 12100:2010 – Safety of Machinery and ISO 13849 – Safety-Related Parts of Control Systems is required.
• Certified Machinery Safety Expert by TÜV-Nord or equivalent machinery safety certification will be an added advantage.
Relevant Experience
• Relevant experience in machinery safety assessment, HSE / SHE engineering, manufacturing safety, machine guarding, risk assessment, plant engineering, automation or industrial inspection.
• Good exposure to manufacturing environments such as E&E, semiconductor, automotive, machinery, heavy industry, food, chemical or general manufacturing will be advantageous.
• Experience conducting safety inspections, HIRARC / risk assessments, audits, incident investigations, technical reporting or compliance reviews is preferred.
• Able and willing to travel up to 50% of the time to customer sites and project locations.
