Role Purpose

The Environmental Impact Assessor is a Subject Matter Expert role responsible for delivering Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and related environmental advisory assignments to support SGS Malaysia’s expansion into the marine, offshore and upstream EHS market. The role will provide regulatory and technical expertise, perform EIA work, support customer engagement and contribute to solution selling for new market opportunities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead and perform Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) assignments for marine, offshore, upstream, coastal, industrial and other EHS-related projects.

• Provide technical and regulatory input to support customer engagement, proposal development, tender clarification, scoping and solution selling.

• Plan, coordinate and deliver EIA work programmes including project scoping, baseline data review, field work coordination, impact assessment, mitigation planning and reporting.

• Prepare, review and present technical reports such as EIA reports, Environmental Management Plans (EMP), environmental studies, monitoring plans, technical proposals and client presentations.

• Provide expert advice on environmental risks, applicable regulatory requirements, mitigation measures and practical environmental management strategies.

• Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are completed accurately, timely, safely and in accordance with SGS quality expectations.

• Support internal capability building by sharing technical knowledge, regulatory updates, methodologies and lessons learned with relevant SGS teams.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct environmental screening, scoping, baseline condition analysis, site assessments, data collection, field surveys and impact analysis for assigned projects.

• Identify and evaluate potential environmental impacts and develop practical mitigation, monitoring and environmental management measures.

• Prepare EIA, EMP, environmental monitoring and audit documentation, technical reports, proposals, method statements and related project deliverables.

• Interpret and apply relevant Malaysian environmental legislation, DOE requirements, guidelines, standards and project-specific compliance obligations.

• Liaise with clients, regulatory authorities, technical specialists and stakeholders to obtain information, clarify requirements and support successful project delivery.

• Coordinate fieldwork, environmental sampling, data recording, subcontractor input and multidisciplinary technical inputs where required.

• Review data quality, calculations, assumptions, evidence and report content to ensure technical accuracy, consistency and defensibility.

• Provide technical inputs during business development activities, including feasibility review, scope definition, resource estimation and proposal support.

• Maintain confidentiality, impartiality, professional integrity and good documentation control in all assessment and consulting activities.

• Keep abreast of EIA, marine/offshore environmental, sustainability and regulatory developments relevant to SGS Malaysia’s services.

• Adherence to SGS Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy by upholding good safety behaviour and exercising necessary standards and processes when carrying out responsibilities at all times to ensure compliance with the HSE requirements.

• Perform any other responsibilities as assigned by your reporting manager and/or Senior Management.

Qualifications

Qualification

• Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Marine Science, Chemical / Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management or a related discipline.

• Registered Environmental Impact Assessment Consultant under the Department of Environment (DOE) Malaysia with at least 5 years of relevant EIA experience.

• DOE EIA Consultant Team Leader registration with at least 7 years of relevant experience is highly preferred.

Relevant Experience

• Proven experience in EIA, EMP, environmental studies, environmental consultancy, environmental compliance or related EHS project work.

• Preferred exposure to marine, offshore, upstream oil and gas, coastal, infrastructure, industrial or port-related environments.

• Experience preparing technical reports, conducting field assessment, analysing environmental data and engaging with clients / regulators.

• Experience in consulting, TIC, engineering advisory, environmental advisory or multidisciplinary project environments will be an added advantage.

• Possess a valid driving licence and willingness to travel up to 50% depending on project and customer requirements.
