Job Description
The successful candidate performs all marine surveys and inspections of ships and cargoes, including sampling, as well as oil inspections on oil tankers and oil cargoes. The Inspector performs quantity determination inspections on ships, barges, pipeline oil transfers, and chemical and petrochemical products.The position of Inspector comes with four (4) levels of competency (from Entry Level L1 to Level L4, as described in the Collective Agreement), assessed according to skills and experience in the inspection sector.
- Carry out sampling of shore tanks or ships according to established procedures to obtain representative samples using various methods imposed by the company and/or by ASTM or API procedures.
- Identify and correctly fill in all sample labels with the required data.
- Gauge and take temperatures of ship tanks and shore tanks using various company-mandated methods and/or ASTM/API procedures.
- Calculate and certify transferred quantities and perform full reconciliation of these quantities.
- Ensure that all equipment is clean and properly calibrated, and that calibration data has been recorded prior to any use of the equipment.
- Clean and maintain inspection equipment.
- Accurately complete all required reports and forms.
- Work constructively with client representatives, as well as ship and shore personnel to ensure proper follow-up of activities and that tasks are completed correctly and in a timely manner.
- Communicate regularly with office staff regarding work status, issues, and concerns.
- Be aware of and adhere to the latest industry standards and procedures provided by field supervisors and/or office staff.
- Ensure work practices adhere to established procedures and all quality control standards and best practices where required.
- Always work safely and in accordance with company and terminal guidelines.
- Candidates will be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- On occasion, candidates will also be required to work on call.
- Candidates will be required to travel to client facilities to perform their responsibilities.
- Special or ad hoc projects may be assigned from time to time.
- Cargo Inspections
- Perform cargo inspections to verify the condition, quality, and quantity of cargo.
- Inspect containers.
- Perform ship hold inspections.
- Write reports on completed inspections and respond to client questions and concerns.
- Support other employees with their duties as needed.
- Petroleum Product Inspections
- Carry out oil cargo inspections to verify the condition, quality, and quantity on board tankers.
- Perform oil cargo inspections to verify the condition, quality, and quantity in shore tanks.
- Perform tank inspections to verify tank cleanliness, compliance, and condition.
- Carry out bunker tests.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma (or equivalent) is required
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience or equivalent experience gained through education.

- Work Schedule variable: Day / Evening / Night / Weekend - 40 hours / week
Knowledge / Skills
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required, as a minimum.
- Post-secondary education in cargo inspection or related field would be considered a strong asset.
- At least 1 year of experience in a field related to petroleum and cargo inspections is an asset.
- Be meticulous and punctual when performing tasks associated with oil sampling.
- Demonstrate a desire to work and learn more about the marine/oil industry.
- Ability to read, understand and follow work instructions in a timely manner.
- Proficiency in various types of software (Word, Excel, etc.).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including grammar and writing texts.
- Ability to work in a group and independently.
- Proven time management skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Extended hours may be required on occasion.
- The successful candidate must be able to work irregular hours according to shipping schedules (days, nights, weekends, and holidays), in addition to being on call 24 hours a day.
- Occasional travel to other SGS offices is expected.
