Job Description
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform the role of Senior Operator within the mineralogy division. The responsibilities and authorities of the senior operator in mineralogy in relation to post requirements are outlined.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the mineralogists with the execution of testwork.
- Responsible for ensuring turnaround time is adhered to, for work specified regarding the mineralogy division
- Routinely provide training to existing technicians/operators, new technicians/operators and temporary workers.
- Assist with troubleshooting
- Must be able to prepare samples for mineralogy testwork.
- Accurate recording and monitoring of sample flow and chain of custody.
- Accurate weighing and recording of sample/aliquot masses.
- Wet and dry screening.
- Filtration: Vacuum and Pressure.
- Crushing, splitting and pulverisation.
- Preparation of blocks or thin sections.
- Must be able to perform heavy liquid separation tests.
- Work unsupervised preparing
- Assist the Sample Preparation supervisor, especially with overtime
- Ensure that all sample preparation is done correctly so as to avoid contamination, sample loss and sample swapping.
- Ensure that all equipment is clean prior to and after a test.
- Responsible for bringing all problems (technical and managerial) to the attention of any mineralogist or manager.
- Ensure the working area under their responsibility is clean and safe, according to the housekeeping requirements of the SGS health and safety management system.
- To work in other areas of the MetMin division if required to do so.
- Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
- Perform any other reasonable task as assigned by the direct line manager.
COMPLIANCE & AUTHORITY
- Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or enter hazardous environments without the necessary knowledge and protection and report the situation to a higher authority to take action.
- Cease to carry on with work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and report the situation to a higher authority to take action.
- Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.
Qualifications
- Senior certificate or equivalent.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in mineralogical sample preparation.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Able to follow written English instructions to the finest detail.
- To have good English communication skills.
- To have basic computer literacy (Word and Excel).
