Job Description
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform the role of Head of Department (HoD) within the division. The responsibilities and authorities of the HOD in Mineralogy in relation to post requirements of managerial, technical and key support personnel are outlined.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for the day to day technical coordination and operation of the Mineralogy division, including operation and maintenance of the XRD and QEMSCANs.
- Responsible for the effective and efficient running of the mineralogical equipment (QEMSCAN, XRD, Optical Microscopes, Carbon Coater etc) with very low down times (percentage availability).
- Assist management with work routing, formulating changes, improving work flow and maximum utilization of resources in the department.
- Assist management in achieving budget revenues and profitability forecasts for the division.
- Coordinate method development.
- Responsible for effective and appropriate use of equipment and facilities.
- Assist management with development, effective utilization and supervision of human resources within the department, including training, recruitment and discipline.
- Responsible for the acquisition of accurate mineralogical data and high quality technical reports delivered on schedule and within budget ensuring client satisfaction.
- Keep abreast of new trends and current developments in Mineralogy.
- Client liaison is essential.
- Ensure that clients are invoiced monthly for testwork completed and reported.
- Preparation of proposals to achieve the client’s objectives.
- Assist with results evaluation and troubleshooting.
- Work is scheduled and carried out in a timely manner, and relevant quality benchmarks are maintained.
- Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
- Perform any other reasonable task as assigned by the direct line manager.

- Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or enter hazardous environments without the necessary knowledge and protection and report the situation to higher authority to take action.

- Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.
OTHER/CONTACT US
The position requires the HOD to travel between Bryanston and Randfontein operations for meetings when required.
Qualifications
Education
- B.Sc Hons in Geology
- 5-8 years in the relevant field
- Management experience will be advantage
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Solid Management/Senior Supervisory experience
- Good communication, people and financial skills
- Project Management
