Job Description
This position will supervise all activities and staff within the Wet Chemistry department including BOD analysis, auto titrators, TOC analyzers with potential added responsibilities for IC analysis and discrete analyzers as structural changes are made to meet future business needs.
- Schedule the workflow throughout the department by meeting turnaround and quality standards.
- Solve day-to-day process and technical problems.
- Supervise and train including preparing performance reviews for departmental staff.
- Supervise staff to carry out laboratory analysis according to established methods and meeting Quality Control (QC) standards.
- Schedule work flow through the department so that client deadlines are met in a timely fashion; monitor throughput and performance.
- Monitor and maintain lab QC standards. Responsible for the quality of all data released by the department.
- Work in partnership with lab personnel to solve client problems to ensure quality and customer satisfaction standards are met.
- Train & motivate staff, set goals, review performance and assess training needs.
- May develop new laboratory methods in response to client/market needs with the guidance of the Technical team
- Responsible for maintaining a sufficient stock of laboratory supplies for their department i.e. procurement.
- Responsible for monitoring and checking for the completion of all daily H&S checks, emergency protocol and any incident/accident reports
- Communicate to Assistant Operations Manager staffing requirements to maintain production.
- Responsible for co-ordinating training programs that are consistent with management objectives, includes quality management system, continuous technical improvement and HR training programs.
- Responsible for documenting and following up on employee performance issues including performance improvement plans.
- Ensuring each person within their responsibility has undergone an orientation (new hire, transfer etc).
Qualifications
- A post-secondary education (degree and/or diploma) in a science related field (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science etc.) is required for the position. A university degree is preferred, however a college diploma from a program that is a minimum of 3 years in length in a science related field is acceptable.
- A minimum of 8 years' experience in an environmental analysis related field (WET Chemistry, Gas Chromatography, Liquid Chromatography, ICP/ICPMS, Microbiology and Sample Reception).
- 1 – 3 years of previous leadership experience is required.
- Strong leadership skills and experience in the supervising of small technical teams, ideally including the supervising of people in an environmental related laboratory.
- Previous experience using laboratory instruments and the ability to operate and trouble-shoot them.
- Knowledge of good laboratory practices and good management practices.
- Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
- Candidates must be proficient in using various type of computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.).
- Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment.
- Ability to work well with others & independently.
- Candidates must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills including grammar and composition.
- Works well under pressure.
- Extended hours and shift work may be required from time to time.
- Travel to other SGS locations or client location may be required from time to time.
