Job Description

Racing and Wagering WA have positions available for  Casual Barrier Attendants, primarily located in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Candidates will need to reside in the greater Kalgoorlie-Boulder area as race day duties will be hosted at the Kalgoorlie Boulder Race Club.   

As a Barrier Attendant, you will be responsible for loading horses into barrier stalls safely, efficiently and within strict time constraints on race day.

As well as the loading horses into the barriers, Barrier attendants also:  

  • Identify the need for and control horses for gear adjustment, farrier attention, etc 

  • Aid in the correct placement of the barrier stalls on the track  

  • Aid the jockeys as required  

  • Report all incidents, hazards and breaches of the rules that they witness and are sometimes also required to give evidence at Stewards inquiries 

  • Assist with the catching and handling of riderless and injured horses 

  • Ensure that no horse or rider is given or offered any unfair assistance  

  • Adhere to all Rules of Racing that are relevant to the duties of Barrier Attendant.  

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with: 

  • Extensive experience in handling horses – such as approaching, catching and leading 

  • The ability to work when trials and race days are conducted – this isn’t a 9-5pm role and will require weekend and regional work.  

  • A strong understanding of safety at the barrier for both horses and officials  

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Rules of Racing relevant to Barrier Attendants and starting of trials and races would be an advantage  

  • Sound communication and interpersonal skills with the   Ability to work as part of a team, under the direction of the Starter or their delegate.
