Job Description

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and highly motivated surgeon, who is committed to excellence in Clinical breast surgery to join our dynamic team. This post will be for a substantive appointment, to carry out breast surgical procedures and clinics at Queen Alexandra Hospital and becomes available at the start of October 2026. The appointee will also be required to provide out patient breast clinics, mdt and theatre sessions once or twice a week at St. Mary’s Hospital, Isle of Wight.

 

The breast units carry out both screening and symptomatic assessments, treating over 1000 cancers annually and is an ABS/BAPRAS accredited National Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Training Centre. The Surgical oncology department offers both clinics, MDT and theatre for management of skin cancer and sarcoma. The Breast & Surgical Oncology department participate in numerous national and regional research studies and innovation projects, with an emphasis on device technology and digital health. 

 

Participation in the on call rota for General Surgery is not required but there is a rota for breast surgery on call.

 

The area combines the advantages of city life with rural villages and seaside towns. Portsmouth is a thriving naval city, steeped in history, on the beautiful South Coast with easy access to France and the continent by ferry and airplane. Water sports facilities are excellent with access to the Solent and inland is the spectacular and relatively unspoilt countryside of rural Hampshire, and the South Downs National Park. It is an excellent place to raise a family.

 

This is a 10 PA post, but applicants wishing to work less than full time are most welcome to discuss their requirements.

Candidates wishing to work less than 10 PAs are welcome to discuss their requirements with the department, and where arrangements can be made ensuring continuity of care, part time working will be possible.

Key Responsibilities:

The appointee will join the Breast and Surgical Oncology Team as a Consultant Surgeon, offering breast surgery and will be expected to participate in all facets of departmental activity. 

 

A full-time substantive consultant breast surgical post of 10 PA (8 DCC+2 SPA) is available, covering: 

 

Largely based at Queen Alexandra Hospital the successful post holder with deliver Breast Clinics, MDT Meetings and Breast, Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Queen Alexandra Hospital but also provide out-patient breast clinics or theatre sessions once or twice a week at St. Mary’s Hospital, Isle of Wight.

Full participation in teaching, audit and research will be expected.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice
  • Higher professional training in General Surgery/Breast Surgery
  • FRCS or equivalent

 

Desirable

  • BSc, MSc, MD or PhD
  • Fellowship in Breast Surgery

 

 

Clinical Experience

  • Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights
  • Evidence of a clinical or research fellowship

 

 

Clinical Skills

  • Demonstrable skills and experience of expertise in the areas of special interest relevant to the Job Plan
  • Understanding of clinical risk management

 

Knowledge

  • Able to demonstrate appropriate level of clinical knowledge
  • Knowledge and use of evidence-based practice
  • IT skills
  • Effective, confident presentation ability
  • Experience in and outside specialty

 

Research/Publications

Essential

  • Published research in peer reviewed journal
