Job Description
We are excited to be recruiting for a substantive Consultant and fixed term 12 month, in Emergency Medicine at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust based at Queen Alexandra Hospital to join our current Consultant body to cover both Adult and Childrens Emergency Departments.
Emergency Medicine is at the heart of the hospital’s emergency care pathway and provides high quality care for patients from the moment they arrive at the hospital. The department is led by a highly motivated group of Consultants who are committed to providing high level care with a drive to develop the service further.
Our department is one of the busiest in the South of England. We have recently moved into a state-of-the-art new emergency department building, designed with a large 8 bedded resuscitation room, urgent care area, expanded Childrens Emergency Department with an integrated Radiology Hub including onsite CT scanning. The new department has improved both staff and patient experience. The cubiclised layout across the department promotes better infection control as well as dignity and privacy for our patients. As part of the capital build project our emergency department team have been integral in quality improvement across the unscheduled care pathway, this is an ongoing priority of the team’s vision to provide the best care possible.
This reflects the Trust’s commitment to the service in order for the Emergency Department to deliver high quality and timely care in the face of the pressures resulting from increased emergency admissions and the greater acuity of cases presenting. The department provides mentoring to newly qualified Consultants in order for applicants to develop extended Consultant skills. The Trust has recently been supported by NHSI and has had a number of visits that praised the redirection pathways from triage, the nurse led Emergency Care centre (ECC) as well as all the staffs’ efforts to improve patient safety.

Additional Department Information
Qualifications
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
- Entry on the GMC Specialty Register via:
- Possession of, or within 6 months of obtaining a CCT in Emergency Medicine,
- Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) or
- European Community Rights
- Or: An appropriate higher specialist qualification.
- ALS, ATLS or ETC, APLS provider status and instructor status in at least one life support course
- Revalidated (or in state of readiness for future revalidation)
Clinical Experience
- Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights
- Extensive experience of the full range of Emergency Medicine presentations
Clinical Skills
- Understanding of clinical risk management
- Critical care skills to enable stabilisation of all patients in ED resus
Knowledge
- Able to demonstrate appropriate level of clinical knowledge
- Knowledge and use of evidence based practice
- IT skills
- Effective, confident presentation ability
- Experience in and outside speciality
- An understanding of the Francis report as relevant to the post
