Job Description

  • Directs activities of Additives & Stock Preparation Department with regard to safety, production, quality, budget, cost control, maintenance, crew training, crew assignment and housekeeping.
  • Directs activities of Additives & Stock Preparation Department to supply all paper machines with adequate amounts of quality pulp and additives to maintain scheduled production rates.
  • Supervises matching of colors in all uncoated grades to comply with customer needs, and quality control specifications.
  • Monitors pulp quality and inventory, both purchased, and Pixelle pulp. Understands furnishes, both finishes, both fiber and additives, to see that they are maintained within specified quality limits.
  • Monitors the accuracy of all additives makedown and metering equipment. Initiates corrective action as required.
  • Supervises the slushing of purchased pulp and broke, the preparation of wet end additives and subsequent storage of all materials for use on the paper machines.
  • Monitors paper quality and coordinates with Additives & Stock Preparation and Paper Machine supervision the necessary changes in furnish or refining operations to meet required specifications.
  • Administers safety and housekeeping programs in Additives & Stock Preparation Department.
  • Prepares and administers operating budget for Additives & Stock Preparation Department.
  • Assists in area capital improvement planning.
  • Assures scheduling of personnel for crewing operations with properly trained and qualified personnel on each shift. Assures proper training of all Additives & Stock Preparation Department personnel.
  • Maintains discipline in accordance with Company rules and union contract.
  • Supervises material usage.
  • Stays up to date with new technology in paper additives, coloring paper and fiber preparation.
  • Supervises month end inventory of Additives & Stock Preparation materials as directed by Materials Management and Cost Department.
  • Assist on day-to-day basis in correcting paper making problems so that machine operating broke and downtime goals are met.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication with Additives & Stock Preparation employees to ensure that corrections or changes in operating procedures affecting quality or operations are routinely passed on so that their knowledge and understanding of the paper making process is enhanced.
  • Knowledge of refining, color matching & control, wet end chemicals and additives broke handling, specific grade requirements. Understand the effect of all activities in the Additives & Stock Prep Dept. on the papermaking process.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. Paper Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Pulp and Paper experience preferred.
  • Strong people/team building skills, augmented by advanced capabilities with computers and applicable mill application software.
  • Demonstrate capabilities of an Initiative-taker that is intrinsically motivated.
  • Must demonstrate pro-active skills in problem identification and developing solutions.
  • Good problem solving, organization skills, and decision making that results in performance-enhancing actions to deliver goals.
  • Knowledge of SAP/Optivision systems preferred.
  • Must be detailed oriented.
