Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc. and VINCI Construction Grands Projects are undertaking the design, build, and finance the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations, and Tunnel (South Civil) package.

As Ontario Transit Group, we are now mobilizing our design and construction crews, with major works. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030.

The project will strengthen Ontario’s economy by supporting an estimated 1,500 jobs at the peak of construction.

What is the project?

  • A six-kilometer tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River).
  • Stations:
    • One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station.
    • Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations.
    • Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown).

Job Description

The SEM Mechanic is responsible for supporting mechanical works related to Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) and tunneling operations. This role ensures the safe, efficient installation, operation, and maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment. The SEM Mechanic works closely with project teams to support schedules, uphold quality standards, maintain equipment reliability, and resolve mechanical issues that may impact tunneling progress.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Supervision

  • Perform installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and operation of mechanical equipment used in SEM and tunneling works.
  • Ensure all mechanical tasks are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and technical requirements.

Project Coordination

  • Work collaboratively with engineers, foremen, site managers, and other trades to support mechanical activities within the overall tunneling workflow.
  • Ensure mechanical tasks are integrated smoothly into the excavation and support sequence without disrupting other operations.

Quality Control

  • Follow established quality control procedures to ensure compliance with project standards and specifications.
  • Conduct inspections on mechanical installations, components, and repairs to maintain high workmanship standards.

Safety Management

  • Adhere to all safety regulations, procedures, and best practices related to tunneling and mechanized works.
  • Participate in safety briefings and ensure safe work practices are consistently followed.

Resource Management

  • Support the management of tools, materials, consumables, and mechanical components needed for SEM operations.
  • Ensure required mechanical resources are available when needed and report shortages or issues promptly.

Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of mechanical work, including daily logs, equipment usage, inspections, and maintenance activities.
  • Provide timely updates to supervisors regarding mechanical tasks and equipment status.

Problem Solving

  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical issues that arise during SEM or tunneling operations.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and engineers to develop effective solutions that minimize operational delays.

Equipment Management

  • Assist in the maintenance, repair, and proper functioning of all mechanical equipment used in SEM and tunneling.
  • Coordinate with the equipment manager to ensure machinery remains in optimal working condition and that preventive maintenance schedules are followed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in mechanical work within the construction industry, with specific experience in tunneling or underground construction preferred. 
  • Proven track record in a supervisory role, with strong leadership skills and the ability to manage and motivate a team of mechanical workers. 
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, specifications, and blueprints. Strong knowledge of SEM tunneling processes and the mechanical systems involved. 
  • Deep understanding of safety regulations and best practices, particularly in the context of tunneling and underground construction. Certification in safety management or related fields is an asset. 
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively liaise with engineers, site managers, and other stakeholders. 
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and develop solutions to complex mechanical challenges. 
  • Must be willing to register as a member of the local union.
