Job Description

At Olsson, we help our clients in multiple states navigate complex historical compliance landscapes with ease. We ensure proactive adherence to key historical preservation laws and regulations, including the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and Section 106 review process. Our approach and use of the latest and best methods help clients achieve their project goals while preserving our historical heritage.

Olsson is seeking candidates which meet the United States Secretary of Interior (SOI) Professional Qualifications Standards (36CFR61). The successful candidate may be an archeologist or architectural historian.  As a Senior Cultural Resource Manager specializing in historical compliance, your role is multifaceted and critical in ensuring compliance with state, local, and federal historical preservation regulations and promoting sustainable projects. You will manage compliance projects, conduct cultural resource assessments, work with regulatory agencies, coordinate with clients, and collaborate with team members and outside consultants. You will also mentor and train others on complex compliance work and lead client and regulatory meetings.

Your key responsibilities include:  

Regulatory Compliance: Navigating complex federal, state, and local regulations, and attaining necessary permits and clearances.

National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA): Developing required NHPA documentation, interfacing with agencies (e.g., lead federal agency, Native American tribes, state agencies, State Historic Preservation Office [SHPO], USACE, USFWS) to secure necessary reviews and guidance, and coordinating a multidisciplinary team. 

Field Investigations: Completing or coordinating fieldwork with other Olsson staff or sub-consultants. These investigations include: archeological survey and test excavations, and recording above-ground historic resources such as buildings, roadways, bridges or historic districts.

Public Engagement and Outreach: Organizing public meetings and workshops and gathering community input, soliciting community input to shape projects, communicating project details transparently, and effectively engaging stakeholders. Lead federal agencies may also ask Olsson to assist with tribal consultation requirements.

Collaboration and Interdisciplinary Work: Engaging with engineers, architects, and urban planners to integrate historical preservation considerations and facilitating cross disciplinary work. 

Project Management: Overseeing projects from start to finish, managing timelines, budgets, and deliverables, and coordinating with subconsultant, clients and agencies. 

Comprehensive Background In:Project management, overseeing medium to large scale projects and reviewing projects for historical regulatory compliance.

You bring to the team

  • Meet the SOI Professional Qualifications Standards (36CFR61) for archeologist or architectural historian.
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills 
  • Ability to contribute and work well on a team 
  • Graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, history, architecture, historic preservation or a closely related discipline 
  • 8+ years of experience in archeological or historical research, cultural resource management, or historic preservation compliance
  • Solid work ethic, problem solver, and ability to work independently 
  • Passion for guiding, training, and passing on knowledge to colleagues
