Job Description

This role bridges strategic direction and field implementation, managing teams, budgets, and technical outputs while ensuring compliance and continuous improvement. Specifically, the incumbent is accountable for the design, planning, and execution of programs that deliver asset growth and additional discovery through execution of high-quality technical programs.  The role is accountable for coordination and delivery of technically robust outcomes and proposes recommendations for key decisions to advance the portfolio of projects.  The incumbent is also accountable for safe execution of programs, technical leadership of direct reports, and effective communication of exploration results. The role is accountable for ensuring that OGC governance frameworks are following and overall technical performance that contributes to the overall objective of discovering additional resources for OceanaGold.

  • Lead by example in safe behaviours in all aspects of the work, including championing those programs that support excellence in safety performance (including but not limited to Critical Control Field Verification, Job Hazard Assessments, Hazard and Incident Reporting, Stop and Think, and Our Safe Behaviours)
  • Demonstrate visible safety leadership through leading safety toolbox meeting and actively participating in safety briefings. 
  • Design and deliver drill programs that effectively and efficiently test targets within our portfolio
  • Uses results of these programs and integrates them with the wider knowledge and understanding of the exploration search area to improve and advance the project pipeline.
  • Maintain and keep current geological models and interpretations, including supporting databases, that underpin decision-making and growth of the asset base.
  • Effectively manage contractors to a high level of safety and technical performance through regular meetings and assessments to ensure continued alignment and delivery of positive outcomes.
  • Accountable for the completion of internal and regulatory reporting requirements to ensure that the tenements and programs are kept in good standing.
  • Collaborate with Resource Development and Mine Planning teams to realise effective and thorough transmission of exploration results and resource models to those teams for further resource development.
  • Manage the allocated budget to support work programs and reports in a timely and accurate manner project-level expenditures, variances, and forecasts to ensure the programs are completed within budget.  Takes responsibility  for identifying and implementing cost efficiency improvements.
  • Works in close collaboration with Environmental and EA&SP teams to ensure appropriate consultation, permitting, access agreements, and environmental management conditions are met ahead of execution of exploration programs.
  • Shares knowledge and experience to lift technical performance across the team, including coaching and developing team members to build capabilities.
  • Conducts performance appraisals for direct reports and provides recommendations to the Exploration Manager for succession planning and additional professional development
  • Ensures that training and competencies of team are current and appropriate for the tasks to be carried out.
  • Champions and actively participates in Living Our Values and culture improvement events that strengthen the Values of OGC.
  • Carry out other duties as directed by the Exploration Manager

Qualifications

  • The role requires a suitably qualified geoscientist with a B.Sc. (or higher) degree in Geology (or earth sciences equivalent) from a recognized university
  • The role requires at least 10 years’ post-graduate experience in exploration and/or mining geology, ideally across a range of geological environments and deposit types
  • The incumbent will have a solid understanding and experience of the acquisition and interpretation of geological mapping, geochemical sampling, and geophysical data to create actionable insights focused on discovery
  • An understanding of resource estimation methodology and geostatistics is also required

Licences/Tickets:

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • The role requires membership of a professional association (e.g. AusIMM, SEG, GSL, SME, AIPG) and ability to act as a Qualified/Competent Person for exploration results reporting.
