Our Waihi Operation in the North Island of New Zealand is an underground gold mine. A recent consent for the Waihi North Project, a new mine to be developed 6km north of the existing operation has provided a long-term extension of mine life providing our 400+ staff and contractors, and the people of Waihi, an assurance that we plan to be here for the long-term.
Job Description
Are you a talented and ambitious student studying towards a Bachelor of Information Technology, majoring in infrastructure and IT engineering and looking to gain practical experience in your field of study? We have the perfect opportunity for you to join our Commercial (IT) team at OceanaGold working at our Waihi operation.
This paid internship opportunity will run approximately from mid-November through to mid-February (dependent on exam timetable of the successful applicant) working with our talented Commercial (IT) team on-site at Waihi. The hours of work are 7:30am to 5:30pm, working a 9-day fortnight roster (5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off) 40.5hrs per week. Take a long weekend every second week to explore the stunning Coromandel!
What will you be doing?
- Gaining practical experience in your chosen field of study by working on diverse projects assigned by department managers and team members.
- Participating in various group activities and projects with other Interns, providing you with a well-rounded knowledge of the mining process.
- Presenting your experiences and key learnings to the Site Management Team at the conclusion of the internship, showcasing your growth and achievements.
Specific project work will involve:
- This project will improve the accuracy and accessibility of OceanaGold Waihi's network documentation by implementing NetBox as the central source of truth for network assets and infrastructure across key sites. It includes documenting and validating network devices, circuits, VLANs, IP addressing, and connectivity, while updating physical network documentation such as topology diagrams, cabling, fibre links, and site interconnections. The project will enhance network management, improve operational efficiency, support troubleshooting and maintenance, and reduce reliance on individual knowledge.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Project milestones include defining the project scope and documentation requirements, reviewing and validating network infrastructure and existing records across key Waihi sites, and populating NetBox with accurate network asset and connectivity information. The project will identify and resolve documentation gaps, verify physical network infrastructure, develop updated network diagrams, complete stakeholder review and quality assurance, and deliver a final documentation package with recommendations for ongoing NetBox maintenance and governance.

Qualifications
What do I need, to join the Intern program?
- Ideally have accommodation options at Waihi or surrounding areas
- Full Class 1 Drivers licence (ability to drive manual vehicles is preferred)
- Unrestricted New Zealand working rights
- Available from mid-November 2026 through to mid-February 2027
- In your 2nd last or final year of role-related study
- Studying towards a Bachelor of Information Technology, majoring in infrastructure and IT engineering
- Current & strong academic performance and a passion for your chosen field
- Effective communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
